i also highly recommened getting a photocopy of the actual document, when you order the certifcate they copy the information to a 'cert' and can often be wrong.....my grandfathers birthdate was wrong on the certificate but correct in the entry. Cheers.

Jericho's summation of the details on NZ BDM's is excellent but applies only to birth and death certificates from 1876 and marriages from 1880. Certificates for BDM's before those dates is a lot less detailed ...
For everyone's information, even marriage certificates from September 1880 can be less detailed. All I got from a printout/photocopy was:
When married, and where (date and church/place) Names and surnames (of bride and groom) Ages Rank or profession Condition (bachelor/spinster) Name of officiating minister (or registrar) When registered (date) Bride and groom's "signatures" (not their original signatures) Witnesses (in the presence of us ...)
So, not even their places of birth were given, nor fathers' names. Perhaps the registrar (in Waimate South) was using up his old book, before starting a new one with the greater detail.
Cheers Koromo

Jericho's summation of the details on NZ BDM's is excellent but applies only to birth and death certificates from 1876 and marriages from1880. Certificates for BDM's before those dates is a lot less detailed especially for Deaths. It is true that certificates cost $26 but a Xerox print out of the actual registration is only $20 and sometimes conveys more information. They are a much better proposition for Genealogists in my opinion.

Hello
a family member had tried to get a birth record for another family member (born about 1937), but was unable to obtain birth information on this individual because it was 'locked', I've been told. Why would this be? What are the reasons for putting a 'lock' on a record so it can't be accessed?
Regards Rachel

Hi, One of the main reasons that it may be locked/sealed is that it could be an adoption record.
Not sure of any other reasons.
Someone else may know more than me about this.

Thanks Eileen
I wonder if there was any way to find out if that individual had been adopted? What documentation would say they'd been adopted? (birth, marriage and death certificates?) Would I have to wait until a certain period of time had lapsed before ordering a birth, marriage or death record? (eg. when the individual has passed away)
Many thanks Rachel

My father was adopted and he has two NZ birth registrations with different folio numbers: one in 1911 under his birth surname when he was born and one in 1916 under his adopted surname.
Last year I ordered his (adopted) 1916 certificate, quoting his birth parents and his original 1911 folio number. They would not send it to me until I quoted his adoptive parents' full names - which is why I was ordering it in the first place, to find out! Luckily I guessed correctly and I duly received his 'adopted' certificate.
It gave his adoptive parents' names and residence (but not their origins) and the statement: "This entry has been made under the Authority of Section 8 Births & Deaths Registration Amendments Act, 1915."
I don't know, but I have the feeling that if someone was adopted their original birth certificate is permanently restricted. In my case I didn't quite make 100 years to see if it might be different.
Cheers Koromo
