Hi Audrey
Carried out a search of marriage records for St Cuthberts Parish - Jan 1850 - Nov 1856 - I can find no record of John Sewell marrying Mary Douglas.
There is a John Sewell (Railway Guard) of Long Island, Carlisle, marrying an Anne Beckton (Servant) of Lowther Street. Sewells father is listed as John Sewell (Bookkeeper) and Becktons father shown as Thomas Beckton (Steward). Ceremony took place on 27th April 1851
I think I will do a census check for Mary Douglas in 1851 census. If she was living in another parish, perhaps they got married there.
(Might she have got hitched in Dumfries, seeing as she was originally from there?)

Therefore checked St Marys Marriage records 1851 - 1856 for Sewell and Douglas - no record
I will try a check for Christ Church marriages, then I think I must retire!
