Neilson family/Spur Hotel, Cumbernauld
« on: Friday 09 June 06 20:26 BST (UK) »

I am seeking any information about the family of Robert Neilson who was the Inn Keeper at the Spur Hotel in Cumbernauld.  The family were at the hotel in the 1881 census.

Robert's wife Mary does not appear with the family in the census - I'm not sure if she was staying elsewhere at the time or had passed away.  The children that were with Robert were:

Jean W. NEILSON   aged  24 born Falkirk;
Lizzie J. NEILSON   aged 22 born  Falkirk;
Robert A. NEILSON aged 18 born Falkirk;
Agness M. NEILSON aged 15 born Falkirk;
John R. NEILSON aged 12 born Falkirk;
James R. NEILSON aged 8 born Cumbernauld; and
William T. NEILSON aged 6 born Cumbernauld

Several other children are recorded in the LDS.

I would be grateful for any assistance in finding out what happened to the family after 1881.

The census record says that Robert was W. for widower

You have a daughter missing shown on the 1881 -

Mary B. NEILSON aged 26 and born in Falkirk, occupation Inn Keeper's daughter

The IGI (extracted record) suggests that she was Mary Baird Neilson, daughter of Robert Neilson and Mary Baird born  26th Feb 1853 in Falkirk.

The other children are all of Robert Neilson and Mary Cowie according to the IGI

Jane Walker NEILSON born 24th  Dec 1854 Falkirk

Agnes Medina NEILSON born 9th  Sep 1865 Falkirk

Elizabeth Isabella NEILSON  born13th Dec 1856 Falkirk - shown as Lizzie J. on 1881

Catherine Hay NEILSON born 11th Sep 1858 Falkirk - not shown on 1881

John Raphael NEILSON born 24th Apr 1851,  Falkirk or 2 Dec 1867, Falkirk - both IGI extracted

Robert Alexander NEILSON  born12th  Feb 1863 Falkirk

James Ross NEILSON -  21 APR 1872 Cumbernauld, Dunbarton, Scotland

Matilda Robina NEILSON  (or Robina Matilda, not shown on 1881) born 26th July 1870 Cumbernauld or 25th May 1861, Falkirk - both IGI extracted

William Thomas NEILSON born 22nd  Sep 1874 Cumbernauld

A free search on ScotlandsPeople shows one entry for the death of a Mary Cowie/Neilson in Cumbernauld between 1874 to 1881

A free search of SP 1891 shows one Robert Neilson aged between 65 and 70 in Cumbernauld who is probably the same one .......

Thank you for that information - I will try to get there to have a look at the place.

As LindsaySiam advised previously there was a Robert Neilson living in Cumbernauld in 1891 who would be about the right age.

If anyone has access to the 1891 census I would be interested to know whether he was still the landlord of the Spur Hotel and also who else was living with him.
