After more than a year of searching I now believe that Robert Cooper who was from Leytonstone might have married a Catherine from Glasgow. They had children Florence (1910), Jean, Ethel and Margaret and did end up in Leytonstone but were they married in Scotland? Were the children baptised in Glasgow? Is there anywhere I can search on the internet for Scotland?

Hi Lindsay, many thanks for that. I am now 99% sure that my Robert Coopers wife was Catherine and she was from Glasgow. Now I just have to find a marriage that will link the two. I am not sure where they married but it was very often where the wife was from. I am thinking that one daughter was born 1910 (the others I don't know if they were older or younger) they may have married any time between 1895 - 1900.

We found them on a census (but for the life of me I can't remember which one, possibly 1891 or 1901). I will have to ask my mum if she can remember and let you know. Many thanks Wendy

Hi Lindsay, this is what we found,
23, Maud Road, West Ham
Robert Cooper 40 Farrier Journeyman – London, Islington
Catherine Cooper 37 - Scotland, Glasgow
Robert W. Cooper 13 – Shaper Rly Worker – London, Clerkenwell
We arn't 100% this is the right one but it is a good possibility.

Hi Woowoo,
It must have been the 1901 census that you looked at because judging from the 1891, I would say there is a strong possibility that her name was Catherine Brennan.
Living at 1a, Moreland Street, St. Luke, London (Holborn) in 1891
Robert W Cooper, aged 31, (born c.1860) Islington, London, Farrier Smith Catherine Cooper, aged 27, (born c.1864), Wife born in Scotland Margaret C Cooper, daughter aged 7, (b. c. 1884) Aldershot, Hampshire Robert W Cooper, son aged 3, (born c.1888) in Clerkenwell, London Agnes Brennan, sister in law, single aged 18, (born c.1873) Cloth Worker in Wool, born in Ireland
I think these are the births of the children
Margaret Christina Cooper Jan-Feb-Mar, 1884, Farnham Hampshire Robert Walter Cooper Apr-May-Jun ,1887, Holborn London
You say that you aren't 100% but think this family is a 'good possibility' ... why do you think they are yours please???
Also you mentioned the birth of a Florence in 1910 - that would mean that there would be 26 years between Margaret Christina above and Florence, meaning Catherine would have been 46 when Florence was born which of course is not impossible ......
The IGI has only one Catherine Brennan born in Glasgow between 1859 - 1869, the daughter of a John Brennan and Margaret Connolly but I honestly don't think that she is the Catherine Brennan above as I am pretty sure that the daughter of John and Margaret Connolly is still living with her parents and siblings in Barony, Lanark in 1881. The census then doesn't show an 8 year old Agnes with them but does show an 8 year old son born in Glasgow so unlikely that they would have been in Ireland at the time that Agnes was born.
There is an 8 year old Agnes Brennan living in Glasgow in 1881, with her widowed father, John Brennan, a 38 year old furniture porter, born in England. This Agnes was born in Ireland and from the IGI, I think she was the daughter of a John Brennan and Catherine Gray. The interesting thing here is that although the IGI doesn't show a daughter, Catherine to this couple, they appear to have moved backwards and forwards between Glasgow and Dublin according to the birthplaces of the children listed for them.
I can't find Robert on the 1881 census in England, maybe somebody else would have better luck?
regards,
Lindsay

Thank you very much for all your hard work. I will have to work through this and see what I can come up with. I know Florence did have a sister called Margaret but I don't know where or when she was born. All I know is that she married a Cyril Rylance in about 1930 and had a son called Donald born in the same year. He was baptised in Leytonstone so I gather they must have lived there. But would she had been born in the 1880's. That doesn't seem quite right somehow. Oh well!!!! Many thanks again. Wendy
