I've got a birth certificate from 1856,the registration district on Cheshire BMD was Crewe,the District was Nantwich,the sub district was Wybunbury (whoever filled it in put Wybinbuy,so I'm guessing at Wybunbury) and the Address was Lawrance st,Monks Coppenhall.
I can't find it on Auto route.There is a Coppenhall Moss but its too far North,and there are streets called Monks..... and Coppenhall......... around the Crewe area.
Can anyone tell me for definite where it was?

there is a Lawrence street 1 1/2 miles from Coppenhall Moss,
and Genuki says Monks Coppenhall was in Nantwich Hundred (SJ 7056), anyone know what those numbers mean?

Hi Jaywit,I did look at Genuki,and I put all the places it mentioned into Autoroute hoping it would narrow it down,but it didn't!!
I like to get the old Alan Godfrey maps so I'm hoping there is a Monks Coppenhall expert out there!!

How about this from the Doomsday Book....
Coppenhal (Copehale): from William Malbank
Part of Crewe:the parishes of Church Copenhall and Monks Copenhall developed with the railway in th 19thC.
So a very old parish.

Hi Tazzie,I've just Googled it again and found the address for the Monks Coppenhall primary school and it looks like it is near Coppenhall Moss.
And I found a website which said ' ...........a small railway station was built at Monks Coppenhall where the railway crossed the turnpike from Nantwich to Sandbach' and when I looked again on Autoroute Lawrence st was right near a railway junction!
So,hopefully,I've found it and it is still there!!

Just in case anyone's interested....... I found this in an 1853 directory...:
"MONKS COPPENHALL,a village and township,4 1/2 miles NE from Nantwich...."
also:
"Crewe is a considerable and thriving market town,partly in Barthomley and Crewe parishes,but principally in Coppenhall parish and locally situated in the Township of Monks-Coppenhall,4 1/2 miles SW by S from Sandbach and about the same distance from Nantwich"
In 1840 there were only about 3 or 4 farm houses in what was then Crewe!!

Hi Andy 001,
If you Google Old Maps and select Cheshire for 1882, and then choose Crewe, you will see that Monks Coppenhall is printed across a wide area which includes the more densely inhabited Crewe.
This Old Map site is a delightful resource and one can often see individual properties in rural areas.

Hi Beth,Thanks for that info. I managed to suss out that Monks Coppenhall was the area we now know as Crewe,so I got the Alan Godfrey map.I didn't know they were on the internet too!
