Hello, I am trying to trace the parents of Rowland Owen born in 1636  in westminster. His parents were named Griffith owen and Lowrey, but have found no joy in looking for them. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks mark

There is a transcription of Rowland's christening on the IDS site

11/09/1636 at Saint Martin In The Fields, Westminster

I can't see anything on his parents though. There are lots of Owen records for this church - looks like the family stayed around!

Hi,

As you probably know you're  a couple of centuries before the point that parish registers provide sufficient evidence of ancestry -- particularly for a name like Owen. Also, many registers for the ancient churches only start in the mid/late C17, so unless the parents married or were baptised in St Martin in the Fields (which begins 1551), there is a good chance these events were not recorded.

Probably the best place to start is wills. The National Archives has Prerogative Court of Canterbury wills online

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/default.asp

and there are a couple of possible Griffith Owens. Another source for Westminster is the Dean & Chapter of Westminster, which handled probate records for this area. These are kept by the Westminster Archives

http://www.westminster.gov.uk/libraries/archives/

The Westminster Archives also have a terrific collection of early parish documents, including apprenticeship indentures. This is assuming, of course, that the Owens lived in St Martin's parish.

best,
Mike
