Wonder why he's listed as "Son" in 1861? I was wondering whether Ann might have been a Hoodless. I think their name reads "Head" not Nead, but I can't match the two names up t a marriage.

Although there are no shortages of Elizabeth Millicans, putting two and two together and hope I'm not making a dozen here, going by the age of the prospective father John and also the birthplace of Hayton .... This is 1851 Hayton, Cumberland Jane Millican Head W 62 Ag Lab Cumberland Hapleton Elizabeth daur U 29 " Cumberland Longtown John Grandson 9 Scholar " Hayton HO107/2427 Brampton, Hayton Folio 54 Page 7
In 1861 young John is as expected out at work at Stone House, Hayton for Eustavius H Coulson a Retired Captain R.N. and his family John Millican is 17 Groom b Cumberland Hayton RG9/3906 Brampton, Hayton Folio 46 Page 11
I've just realised, coincidence .....
There's a great similarity in age between Elizabeth Millican and "Ann Head" and their birthplaces are both Longtown Cumberland - great coincidence since Ann Head is living in Northumberland!! Not all children adopt the stepfather's name.

Just in case it's of any help this is 1841
Little Corby, Hayton, Warwick, Cumberland Joseph Millican 40 Lb Y Jane 45 Y Elizabeth 20 Y James 15 Y Richard 2 weeks Y / Elizabeth Gibson 5 Y Mary Little 80 Ind Y HO107/170/15 Brampton Hayton Folio 4 Page 21
I've looked on the IGI for Elizabeth with parents Joseph and Jane but all I can find for that date is one in Nichol Forest and judging by other censuses, that is a different one.

Hi there Elizabeth Millican and John Hoodless are ancestors of mine too. I read your trail above trying to locate their various vital records. My family are in possession of the family bible of Elizabeth Millican and William Head, it records their marriage on the title page as 16 November 1856, however i've not been able to find evidence of this in the BMD reg. From the info in the bible I believe Elizabeth Millican may not have married John Hoodless - since her marriage record in the bible to William Head uses her maiden name Millican.
To complicate things further she appears to have had a child John Millican out of wedlock, birth date 8 May 1844 and then had three children to John Hoodless, (Joseph Hoodless 11 Apr 1849, William Hoodless 8 Oct 1851 and John Joseph Hoodless 27 Sep 1853) but only William survived past infancy. the bible records the deaths of her parents Joseph Millican 6 Jan 1848 aged 54 and Jane Millican 14 March 1874 aged 93 - so it would seem likely that they are the Joseph Millican and Jane Little married at Nicol Forest 1820 (Longtown, Elizabeth's birthplace is nearby).
There were no issue from her union with William Head who died 6 Nov 1881 and she went on to marry John Banks, 1891 Census has them living at Dearham and the bible records her death under the name Elizabeth Banks (ne Head, ne Hoodless) 4 Oct 1899.
Hope this is of some assistance...

Hi Sue,
Thanks for your reply! Its very exciting to know we are both descendants of William Hoodless! I was born in Workington, Cumbria but have lived 20 years now in New Zealand. I've been rummaging through the family tree now for quite a while but only recently got down to serious research via the wonders of the internet. Its lovely to meet you - a fellow Hoodless :-)
My descent comes through William's oldest son John Joseph Hoodless, his daughter Mary Jane by his first wife Elizabeth Messenger (who died shortly after the birth) was my great grandmother. I was aware of the account of the pit explosion that killed William - thank you - I can also add for you some oral history. My greatgrandma Mary Jane was raised by William's wife (her grandmother and named for her) and she was known as Mother Hoodless. When news came to the house that there'd been an accident at St Helens pit and William was trapped, she sat up in the chair by the fire all night and the next night waiting for news. As you know they were unable to reach Williams body for about 3 months. My greatgrandma said she slept every night in the chair and even after the body was recovered, she never went to her bed again, but slept every night sitting in the chair. According to the bible record they had 10 children were you aware? I'd be happy to share my tree with you of course, which now includes all the info from the family bible, and be very interested to know your connection and descent.
I thought I might add that there is no mention in the the family bible that Elizabeth's name included the Ann. In all entries she is listed as Elizabeth only. So I also find the 1861 census entry very peculiar in using Ann Head (but surely it is her since all other info seems to match).

Hi! I am trying to trace relatives and descendents of William Hoodless (1851 - 1904) and Mary Jane Fletcher (1854 - 1939)? I am a descendent of Mary Janes brother Irving Fletcher (1851 - 1906). Thanks, Andrew Pattison
