I should be grateful if someone is able to find Ann Walker and her family in Belper in the 1841 census. She was born in Belper c.1823. (Ann married a James Attenborough c. 1842 and at least one of her children was born in Belper (1857).)
Thank you.
Regards,
Ian

Hello Ian,
There are at least three possibilities on the 1841 census in Belper so do you have any more info. Do you have her fathers name from her marriage certificate or a particular address in Belper?
Thanks.

Nettle,
Thanks for your help. So far I have been unable to find the marriage certificate despite the help of the registrar at Amber Valley. So I opted for a birth certificate to confirm Ann's maiden name. This does give a location so it might help: Ann's son Isaac was born on the 16th December 1859 at Short Rows, Belper. The names of her other sons are James (after her husband?) and William (after her father/father-in-law?). The oldest child was born 1843/4 at Belper.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Ian

The three possible Anns that i can see have fathers William, Joseph and Isaac. Ages are of course supposed to be rounded down to nearest 5. Going by Anns age alone, makes Isaac the likely father, with her age being given as 15 whereas the other two are 20. However, this is not reliable. you may have to keep looking for the elusive marriage cert.
If you send me a Personal Message with your email address i can send you the census pages.

hi again,
have just found on FreeBMD website a marriage ref transcribed as a "James Attenborow" in Belper, 3Q 1842. BUT, there is no reference for an Ann Walker at the same date. Confusing!
I have to leave work now - but will log on again later.

Hi,
Could it be a second marriage for Ann, her maiden name would still be shown on the birth certificate of children from her second marriage.
In 1851 I can see Isaac WALKER with his widowed daughter Ann,
1851 HO107/2144 f.536 p.24 Belper
No. 21 Birkin Court
Isaac WALKER Head Widow 60 Retired Nail Maker Derbyshire Belper Ann HUNT Daur Widow 28 Employed at Cotton Spinning Factory " " William WRAGG Lodger Unm 39 " " " " " " Jeremiah SMITH " " Unm 35 Framework Knitter Nottinghamshire
There is this marriage,
Ann WALKER Mar Q 1843 Belper v.19 p.327 Matthew HUNT (amongst other names)
If Nettle has sent you the image you can see Matthew HUNT was living in the same household as Isaac & Ann WALKER in 1841.
This could be Matthews death,
Matthew WALKER Mar Q 1845 Belper v.19 p.359
Then there is this marriage,
Ann HUNT Jun Q 1857 Derby v.7b p.599 (amongst other names) James ATTENBOROUGH
In 1861 I can see this family which seems to include your Isaac, transcribed as HATTERBOROUGH, I think it looks like HATTENBOROUGH
1861 RG9/2509 f.104 p.8 Belper
Short Row
James HATTENBOROUGH Head 40 Collier Ann Wife 38 Mill Hand Hannah Daur 8 Scholar Ann Daur 3 Isaac Son 1
All born Belper.
This all seem to fit apart from you mention the oldest child was born 1843/4, I can't find any children born around then in 1851 except a John ATTENBURY, b.1847 who is the son of a widowed Mary Ann ATTENBURY, who to confuse things further is living at home with her parents, John and Ruth WALKER
Also where does daughter Hannah fit in
Now I've confused myself
Regards Daisy

Could Hannah be from James first marriage? And could this be him in 51? If so looks like he remarried into the family. But where is Mrs Attenbury? Jan

Wow! All this information.
The Hunt theory looks good, particularly the 1851 census extract for the Marketplace, Belper as my James Attenborough/Attenbury was a brickmaker born in 1823 but in Stapleford. TJames & Ann can be found in the 1871 census at Flixton, Lancashire (RG10/3972 Folio 179) with two more brick making Attenborough families nearby at RG10/3972/Folio 161 and RG10 /3972 Folio 172.
I think I need some time to absorb all the information provided by so many helpful people.
Thanks again.
Regards,
Ian

Ian,
I'll send you a copy of the 1841 census with a James Attenborough and his family in Heage, nr ripley. Seems like the one - mixture of coal mining and brick making in the family. I'm starting to wonder if James mught even have been married three times as only one crops up on the census' and there is also an earlier marriage in 1842 Belper (although he would be barely 20 at most.
I think i have found his wife and a child on the 1851 - in South Winfield there is a Mary ann Hunt Attenborough aged 7 mths and a mother given as Mary Ann Alton (name of people next door). Despite this discrepency the reason i think this is definitely her (apart from name of daughter) is that she is also lodging with a William Attenborough whose details tie in with a brother of James. What she is doing there with a 7 month old daugther is anybody's guess!
I'll leave you in peace now - happy unscrambling!
Nettle.

Hi Think that Daisypetal has the answer
1st Marriage on IGI Ann Walker Father Isaac Walker married 19.2.1843 Crich Derbyshire Matthew Hunt Father Matthew Hunt THIS WOULD BE BELPER REGISTRATION DISTRICT.
If Mathew died 1845 would explain why on 1851 Census she is a widow living with her Father Isaac Walker in Belper.
On the 1871 Census Flixton the daughter Hannah Attenborough states born in Oakerthorpe Derbyshire.
This should give a clue as to Birth Registration, sorry I do not know what Registration District Oakerthorpe comes under, but I think you need to look for a Hannah Hunt because the 2nd Marriage to James Attenborough did not take place until June 1857.
Spendlove.

Unless she is from James and Mary Ann's marriage - seems quite likely as Mary Ann's mother is Hannah. Wonder when Mary Ann died? Will have a look. Jan

There is an 1855 death for a Mary Ann Attenborough in Belper district on FreeBMD - would fit nicely if it is her.

Don't think this has been mentioned. In 1861 nextdoor to James and Ann is Isaac Walker Widower 70 Nailmaker born Belper in household of Patrick and Sarah Corfield. Sarah is 30 born Belper - Ann's sister perhaps
