Looking for a William Douglas.

Hiya Harvey Rabbit,

I don't know about Aberdeen seaman in particular but I'm just starting to investigate my Annan/Dumfries merchant seaman and I've found their registrations at the PRO in Kew.  Records seem to be patchy but the years you are interested in are covered.

The 1835 Merchant Shipping Act saw the first surviving central register from crew lists.  The years covered over the different films are 1835-1857.

Most seem to be indexed, to give you an idea what it shows I've attached an image. It shows James & Francis Carruthers both born in Annan age 34 and 21 respectively it then gives info on voyages.

If you can get there it is worth it if you find your guys.

However, the local records office may have a copy of the records on film it would be worth calling them.

Hope this helps,
Pam

hi Pam,
do you know of any good researchers who may be able to go to PRO for me? i live north of Inverness, Scotland and it just isn't possible for me to go there.

i need merchant navy records looking at between 1840 and 1851. also do you know if the records would have next of kin listed or a date of death?
my problem is that my ancestor's marriage cert in Inverness (1837) has no parents names, and i cannot find him in 1841 census. he only had 2 children with his wife, the second was born in 1841 and by 1851, his wife is a widow. - and i can find no trace of his death.

sorry about asking you all this, but i am completely stuck as to where to go next. - also, have you any idea of how much researchers charge?

thanks,
Lorna.

Unfortunately I don't sorry.  I'm Scotland based too and have never used are researcher - I'm quite new to this whole thing  Embarrassed

Of the records I saw, and it was only a very brief visit, I didn't see any next of kin.  Sorry.  Not very helpful I know.

Maybe if you post in the library and FHS board?
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?board=150.0

Or maybe asking in teh Common Room if anyone knows about PRO researchers?

Sorry I can't be more helpful it is out of ignorance sorry.

Hi,

Did you have any luck with researchers at Kew? I also have merchant seamen ancestors of the early to mid 1800's (John Booth of Aberdeen & John Frederick Grothenwell Aberdeen?), but it is a far way to travel with no guarantee of finding anything. Have they any plans to put all the info they have on the web sometime, I wonder?

Thanks

I still have not made a trip to Kew but hope to in the future.

I was thinking about posting for kew research request here,

http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/

It is a WW1 site but the enthusiasts visit Kew a lot as that is were all the records are. I have got a lot of help on WW1 stuff but they also have boards for posting off topic stuff. Someone might be willing to do some seaman stuff while they are there doing War stuff...

Might be worth a go.
Very interesting website to brouse anyway!
