Scottish Freemasons
« on: Sunday 24 October 04 15:55 UTC (UK) »

I have hit a roadblock with several of my Scottish ancestors and have one clue that may help me get further if I can unlock the clue.  Approximately thirty years ago, an elderly relative (who immigrated to the US) told my uncle that one of his grandfathers was "a big deal" in the Scottish Freemasons.  Unfortunately, at the time my uncle wasn't much interested in the family history and didn't get the important details.  The following possible grandfathers have been identified:

John LIVINGSTONE b. 1833 Pollockshaws, wife Crawford Spencer (immigrated US in 1873)
John SPENCER, about 1810-1885, died Glasgow, wife Mary Reid,
Henry SPENCER, father of John, wife Mary Connolly
James REID, 1777 - ?, wife Crawford Warnock
Thomas WARNOCK, ?1750 - ?, wife Agnes McMoultry

All were known to have lived in Glasgow and/or Renfrew in the 1800s.  I wrote to the Grand Lodge to inquire, but unfortunately they require the Lodge name and number to look for records.  Since I don't know which grandfather was "the big deal", I don't have that information to give them.  Does anyone have access to member lists, yearbooks, etc to do a lookup or have ideas of how I could go further with this search?

Many thanks,
Wendy

For much of the period in question Pollokshaws was not a part of Glasgow but was to be found in the eastwood area of renfrewshire.

A list of addresses for modern freemason lodges can be found at
http://www.carstairs.org.uk/masonic/guide/address.html

3 of them are near Pollokshaws
Lodge No. 153-  Pollokshaws Royal Arch 2025 Pollokshaws Road, Glasgow
Lodge No. 1600 Shalom, Fairweather Hall Barrhead Road, Glasgow
Lodge No. 1706 Newton Mearns, Barrhead Road, Newton Mearns, Glasgow

Embarrassed Sorry I should have added that without knowing where in Glasgow or Renfrew the others came from it would be difficult to identify the lodge concerned.

Thanks! This is helpful.
I do have some census and/or BMD info with related addresses:

John Spencer:
1881 Census: 364 Dobbies Loan, Barony, Lanark, Scotland
died 1885: Camlachie (?sp) Glasgow, 57 Glenforth Street
1861 census: Ed 106 pg 6 (Calton) 56 Rumford St.

John Livingstone lived in Bridgeton and Milton districts from ab. 1855-72
1872: 83 Bernard St. Glasgow (Calton on census, but Bridgeton on birth cert??)
1869: 71 Reid St., Glasgow
1861: 3 Cedar Place

I don't have addresses on the others.
Thanks again.

Calton and bridgeton are towards the east end of the city, Dobbies Loan in Barony is near the top (north) end of the modern city centre. Milton is in the North side.

From that list there are several lodges that could fit the bill and unfortunately they are the modern addresses and it is extremely likely that their 19th century counterparts were located elsewhere.

I spoke with a friend today who is a member of one of the lodges and he informed me that around the times in question there would have been far more lodges than there are today. Over the years as populations have moved lodges merged and many dissolved only to reform when new housing was erected in an area. However all records maintained by a lodge would have been sent to the Grand Lodge in Edinburgh who maintained all records ( some apparanetly even go back to 15th Century)

Wow!  I did write to the Grand Lodge in Edinburgh and they responded very quickly, letting me know that they'd be happy to help look for my ancestor, but require the name/number of the lodge since that's how their records are arranged.  So around in circles I go!   Huh
Hopefully somehow I can find some historical information that may help me narrow it down to at least a few lodges.  The link you sent earlier was helpful as it did contain some lodges with links and those had a history page which indicated the date the lodge was organized.  At least that helps to begin to eliminate some from the list!

Thanks, that's helpful.  I found some great old ordnance maps at http://www.nls.uk/digitallibrary/map/townplans/index.html.

I've been looking through the addresses of current lodges and have found that in more than one case, four or five lodges share the same address.  I'm curious about this.

Have you tried looking for your ancestors at the Inchinnan, Renfrew Lodge?  I stumbled across this one when doing my own research.

Thanks. No I haven't looked at that one. Is there a web site affiliated with the lodge?  I haven't seen one and wonder if you have a good source.

And this one may help too:
