Thatcher family of Abingdon
« on: Wednesday 14 June 06 17:06 BST (UK) »

Hi All,
I was wondering is someone could help me with my research on this family.
I am descended from Isabella Sophia Thatcher christened August 23rd 1811 Saint Peters Le Bailey, Oxford, England, she married Giles Dobney 1841 Abingdon Berkshire. Her Father is listed as Thomas Thatcher post office clerk. I have had no luck finding him on the 1841 census. I would love to know who he was married to. On Isabella's christening records it says that her mother is Ann no last name. Although I am wondering if her name is Ann or Hannah as I know these names are interchangeable. The other clue I have is that Isabella's grandchildren carried the middle names of Thatcher and Naylor. I am assuming that Naylor is a family name. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Warm Regards
Wendy

Hi Wendy,

I am afraid my comments are mainly negative.

I have the 1851 census for Berkshire and the name Dobney does not appear at all.

There is also no Thomas Thatcher in the 1851 for Berkshire,
but I would assume that he had not moved from Oxford so, if still alive, I would expect him to appear in the Oxfordshire census.

Isabella had two brothers, Thomas Job baptized 23 Nov 1806 and Henry Valentine baptized 14 Feb 1810.   I would expect these to appear in an Oxfordshire census - if you are very lucky their mother might be living with one of them.

I am very surprised that no maiden name is given for the mother.   Have you seen a copy of the entry in the parish register for the children's baptisms?   If not, you could borrow a copy of it on film from your local Family History Centre of the Mormon Church.[see www.familysearch.org].

The only other suggestion I have for finding the mother is to hope that she and Thomas were married at the same church as the children were baptized.   A copy of the church records on microfiche can be bought from Oxford Family History Society.   Alternatively you could contact the society and ask for a quote to do a look up for you.   I would guess the cost would be no more than a couple of pounds.

I hope you can make use of some of this

Best wishes

Colin

Hi Colin,
Thanks for the information of Isabella's siblings. I will do a search and see if I can find them on the 1841 and 1851 census. I really appreciate the time you spent doing the search for me.
Warm Regards

Hi Wendy

I don't think you have the right church for those baptisms where did you get them from? - according to the baptism index (OFHS) they took place at The New Road Independent church in Oxford - they are certainly not in the transcripts of the baptisms of St Peter le Bailey

Undecided

Hi Debbie,
Thanks for all of that fabulous information. I got the baptism information from LDS. But after looking at it again I see that it is Saint Peter or New Road Chapel. I will change my information to reflect that. Thank you also for looking up Thomas Thatcher's marriage, it certainly sounds like a good possibility.
Warm Regards

Hi  Wendy

I just found my microfiche (by OFHS) of the baptisms at New Road covering that period.  Isabella's reads -

1811 Aug 23 THATCHER Isabella daughter of Thomas and Ann of St Aldgate

which ties in nicely with the marriage - there is no mention of the mothers maiden name which is not unusual for this period - there is also no mention of a second name for Isabella   Undecided

Checking the registers for St Aldgate there are only 3 mentions of the surname Thatcher - all marriages

Thomas to Ann Turner in 1805

Elizabeth to Benjamin Wray in 1813

and Hannah (possibly the witness on Thomas's marriage) to Charles Parker Benham.

Debbie

It is possible that Hannah and Elizabeth were sisters of Thomas

Thanks Debbie,
You are amazing.  Cheesy  Yes, that information ties in nicely with the Thomas Thatcher and Ann Turner marriage.
Cheers
