Help with will please
« on: Thursday 15 June 06 09:19 BST (UK) »

Hi everyone.  I am trying to decipher a will written by my 4x's great grandmother in 1840.  When she wrote this will she was living in Elliotts Row in the parish of St George the Martyr in the county of Surrey.

My problem is that I can not make out the name of the church.

From the second row it reads

ceremony of the funeral I wish and desire may be performed at Huh church in the said county

It would be fantastic if someone could make out the name of the church.

Thanks
Anne in OZ

Hi Anne  Smiley

Looks like "Newington" to me.

Hope that helps!

I agree - "Newington".

Anne, coincidentally Elliotts Row is the address my ggg-grandparents gave upon their marriage in 1852 (they were eloping from Suffolk, and presumably had found a lodging in that little street). They married at the nearby church of St Jude's, now deconsecrated but still standing - but St Jude's was built in the early 1850s so wouldn't have been around when your gggg-grandmother was there.

Thankyou PrueM and Anna.

I will go with Newington.  Am I correct in assuming it was St Mary Newington?  It's the only church I can find when I google.

Also, I am wondering if either of you would know if burials took place in the churchyard or at a cemetery?  Esther's will requested a walking funeral, so I imagine she wouldn't have been buried too far away from the place of the service.

She also requested wine, tea and cake be furnished for her mourners Smiley A nice parting touch I thought.

A nice coincedence Anna, the connections made on this site are mind boggling at times. I now have an internet friend who's family lived next door to mine in St Osyth Essex over 100 years ago, we had a laugh at how our ancesters heads would spin with even the thought of the World Wide Web Wink

Thanks again, I much appreciate the help you have both given me
