Abel Armstrong « on: Thursday 15 June 06 15:59 BST (UK) »
My gg grandfather Abel Armstrong lived in the parishes of Kirkpatrick Fleming and Gretna for most of his life and I have found him in the censuses there. His place of birth is shown as Middlebie, Dumfriesshire he was born around 1807. But where? Can anyone help please? Alan
Middlebie is a village 18 miles from Dumfries. To view it on a 1862 map, go to: www.old-maps.co.uk, choose Place Name, enter Middlebie, then click Search. Although this will bring it up, you should centre it by clicking the bottom arrow once or twice. For an enlarged view, click 2 at the bottom of the map.
I have had a look at the I.G.I. but it has no record of an Abel Armstrong born at Middlebie, Dumfriesshire, but there is an entry of someone of that name born at Canonbie, Dumfriesshire about 1804, the parents shown as John Armstrong and Ann Donaldson. However, this is a submission by a Latter Day Saints member and is not supported by an entry in the Parish Register. Such submissions may be fanciful, and have to be treated with great caution.
Many thanks for all of your help. Abel Armstrong is shown on his headstone as having been born in 1907, I now find. He died in 1894 but consistently showed his place of birth as Middlebie. I would be most interested to learn of the farm on which he was born as that is a part of my investigation into the many farms in the area which were farmed by the Armstrong, Rome and Mitchell families in South East Dumfriesshire over the past 300 + years. The families are, of course all inter-related. Any further information would be very much appreciated. Alan
