The pot was found in the back of a cupboard at my grandparent's house after my grandfather died. We had no idea where it came from.
I have since found out that the inscription on the pot marks the birth of my Grandfathers mother in Dundry, Somerset 1890. She died when he was a boy so it must have held some sentimental value to him. I have subsequently found out that her mother died a few weeks after she was born and was also called Harriet Ann Brown. So it is a very sad little pot!
I was wondering if anyone recognises the style and can tell me any more about it?

Hiya Does the pot have any stamp marks on the base of it? Normally old pottery had the makers stamp at the base of each item that was made

Hi, Thaks for all your comments so far.
There are no stamp marks on the pot.
The line above the writing is a slot. So I guess it was ment to be a money bank? No money in it though! (Or ashes !)

I sent an email to the guy who runs the website you posted the link too. He said the following. -------------------------------------------------
Hello Lindsay
The connection with Dundry would suggest that it was made in Bristol, at either Price or Powells stoneware potteries. There was no one else making Stoneware in Bristol at the time. However, Bristol pieces are usually marked, as are Doulton's (Lambeth, London) and Bourne's (Derbyshire).
It is not salt glazed, but has the "Bristol" glaze developed in 1835, which was also used outside of Bristol (but not at Doulton by this time). It may have been made as a private piece by one of the pottery workers, hence the lack of a mark.
It is impossible to be specific as many of the smaller stoneware potters did not mark their pieces.
Pity about the sad history.
Best wishes
Rod ---------------------------------------------
Might try and contact a local potter......can anyone help with that?
