Many of the old Newport schools' records are kept at the Gwent Records Office, County Hall, Croesyceilliog.

I'm not sure if they have Hatherleigh's records but it's worth a try.

Just reading through and came across this query, cant answer the question but i did attend the school - Its Hatherleigh - it was a lovely old manor house with all the original fireplaces etc.  I remember the beautiful wooden staircase.  It has now been demolised for a number of years and houses built in its place.  The name was taken from Hatherleigh in Somerset - on a good day you could see Hatherleigh from the school.  There is quite a history to the school but i cant remember it now.

Not that this information is of any use to you but my cousin also went there before the war and then went onto St Julian's High School.
He eventually joined the RAF and became a Lancaster bomber pilot and was killed along with his crew in August 1943.

In the latter years of Hatherleigh school it became private where a friend of mine sent his children too.

Hi Lynne

I was at Hatherleigh when it was a secondary modern school i went there in 1958 and left in 1962 or 1963 (cant remember) think it was 62, it was when they allowed you to leave at Christmas if you had reached the age of fifteen by then. I left to go hairdressing as i had been working after school and on the weekend at Stefans on Chepstow Road.  Mentioned this to my mother in law and she attended Hatherleigh also when it was a high school.  I still live in Newport although for the past twenty years i have worked in Cardiff.  I live in Caerleon.

Hi all, I went there in abt 1967 for about 8 months before moving to Poole, Dorset. It was then called St Julians Junior High school and acted as a middle school before St Julians High. im sure ive seen a photo of it on the web somewhere but cant remember where, Phil.
