Death by Lion
« on: Saturday 17 June 06 19:07 BST (UK) »

 Shocked    Roll Eyes

I've been told that Great Grandad George Peters was found dead in the lions cage (he was the father of James Peters, the first Black England Rugby player).

It would have happened after 1886 (the year of birth of his last child) and 1891 when James was put in an orphanag in London.

Any one have anything on this event?  Would it have made a 'big splash' in the news?  Don't even know where it happened, but surely it would have been quite big headline news?  Any advice would be welcome.  Or better still confirmation of the facts.

Thanks vm - Kim

The website Winston pointed out - I've known about for a while as James Peters has been my main project.  He is what started the family history trail for me.

Thanks for the info on George.  Have made a note on my notes for follow up.

I'm new to the board so have a lot to learn about how things work here.

Please bear with me  - I will get the hang of it.

Was there when the first ever match for the trophy was played by the Greenwich Admirals.

I presented the trophy with James Peters granddaughter.

HI

I think this would be the family in the 1881 census, as the website I posted said George Peters himself was from the West Indies and this also shows James

Living on what looks like Aldersey Street, Liverpool.

Peters George aged 26 born West Indies Occ C(ircus) Traveller

Peters Hannah aged 25 born Shopshire

Peters James aged 14 born Liverpool

Peters Charlotte aged 3 months born Liverpool
