Family Mystery - William SCHOFIELD

My husband's 2xggrandfather William SCHOFIELD left Oldham for the USA leaving his wife and 2 children behind with the intention of them joining him in USA afterwards (allegedly!!).  I think I've found him on the Ellis Island site, he was born 1860 in Oldham and arrived on the Majestic 7 Jul 1898.

The manifest says that he was going to live with his uncle William SCHOFIELD (born 1835, Oldham) at 232 Kensington Ave, Philadelphia.  I have his wife, Jane and family in UK 1901 census (RG13 3819/19 Page 30) where she is down as married.  Family story has it that he died in USA and Jane had a fight with the insurance company to prove his death but was eventually paid out.

Can anyone help with census lookup (not sure if he was alive or not in 1900) or how I can find his death, or any information on uncle William from earlier census records?  Or anything else that might be useful.  I've been at a bit of a dead end with this one for some time now.
