If you have Front Page then you can use it to build pages 'by hand', then use Front Page File/Publish to put them on your website.
If you are using a family history program, like Legacy, to store your information then that program can generate web pages automatically. In Legacy select Internet/Create Web Pages... there are masses of options as to how the pages should look.
The FTP manager is a bit like the file manager on your own computer. You can create/delete etc files and directories inside you website.
Files you have uploaded using FTP will sit on your website but to be able to see them you need to create a link from you homepage (thats the one called index.html).
Hope that begins to help. Tony

I find I am being equally slow and need a bit of help please!
I had a friend put a holding page on my website and am now ready to upload the files I generated in Family Historian. I went into the management area and deleted some files, then uploaded all my new files.
But all I get are error messages.
1. All the files are 'loose', ie not in a folder. Should they be? 2. I only have one pic. Should that be in a separate folder? 3. How do I get that link from my homepage to show on the web? 4. And where do I find the tutorial programs? Been looking, but that seems beyond me too at the moment! 5. Are there any files I should not have deleted (eg files which connect my computer to the rootschat one?), and if so, how can I get them back?
Any other helpful suggestions?

Hi Grey Seagull,
What exactly did the errror message say
1) no they don't have to be. BUT once your website expands, you may want to think about a structure, similar to your hard disk, with folders for different themes, families, or topics.
2) same as 1) but think about it for later. Many people put all images ina folder /img just to be tidy . . .
3) You can enter your web addresss in your profile and a globe (as link) will show up under your info. in every posting you make on RootsChat. To have it show on the rest of the web is longer, it take time, but you can help the process along with this: Topic: TUTORIAL: Step-by-Step Guide to building your website 12) Getting your website noticed http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,93490.msg724901.html#msg724901
4) you can find one here: Topic: TUTORIAL: Step-by-Step Guide to building your website http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,93490.0.html
and you might find this list of topics useful Topic: RootsChat Topics: Help with building your website. http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,70811.0.html
5) I don't think that any of the files were absolutely necessary.
Start at the beginning, and, keep asking, everytime you get stuck !
good luck, Bob

Hi Bob, Have downloaded CoffeeCup FTP and opened the program.
Have put in the FTP login on my new account information - ferrierfleminghart.rootschat.net - as the host name and the user name. Entered my password but cannot connect: get error message Site not found. Make sure you are connected to the internet and your hostname is spelled correctly. Have checked the spelling a couple of times, and I am connected to the internet. Am I using the correct name as the username and host name?
Any other suggestions?
Looks quite straightforward once I can get connected.
Oh I chose Abingdon RM. Might that make a difference?
Chris

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Hi I use coffeecup and it took me a few tries to get it right. Have you put in the remote directory address? My server configuration reads
'sitename'.rootschat.net
Webserver address www.rootschat.net
Remote Directory / (this is the file it puts it into)
does this help at all? Anne

Hi Anne,
Have version 3 of coffeecup. Tried www.rootschat.net as host name, but still not working.
I use Mozilla Firefox as my browser and can access the internet ok with that. But when I use Internet Explorer, it won't let me connect to the internet. I have been doing some diagnostics this afternoon to try to find out why it won't let me connect, and it would appear that I do not have an internet connection!!!
So maybe this is the problem.
I need to look into this a bit more, and hopefully once I get the IE sorted, coffeecup will follow...
I live in hope.
Thanks for your suggestions. I may be back...
Chris

Hi Bob & Anne
Have solved (part of) my problem!
I e-mailed my files to a friend and he noticed I had a capital I at index.html
So my website is now up, running and publicised!
All I need to do now is work out what is wrong with my coffeecup and Internet Explorer connection (got my ISP working on that).
Thanks for your help. Much appreciated.
Chris

Hi Chris
And good it looks, too! Well done!
(My only suggestion is to consider whether you want to put your e-mail address on in full - you may find you are subject to more spam that usual if you do.
An alternative is to create a link people can click on which opens up a 'send new message' on whatever e-mail package they are using.)
cheers - and well done, again!!
Paul
