Matthew BUTLER b. approx 1804 Ellesmere
« on: Thursday 16 March 06 22:57 GMT (UK) »

Can anyone help please ?

I am trying to track down Matthew BUTLER b approx 1804 - according to the 1841 and 51 censuses he was born in Iscoyd, Denbighshire and lived in Overton, Flintshire. But lookups in both locations have failed to find him.

But then on the 1861 census he claims to have been born in Ellesmere.
Also, there is a likely death for him in 1866 but that suggests he was born in 1800.

Any help or guidance would be much appreciated,

Thanks
Bev

Hi Bev

I guess this is another look up to add to my list for my next visit to the Shropshire Archives, which holds the parish registers for Ellesmere on Microfiche.

I'm not sure yet when I'll be going but will certainly see what I can find out for you.

In the meantime, if there is any other information that you could let me have I would be grateful.

Thanks Jan - much appreciated.

I'm afraid I can't really add anything to what I've already told you that would help locate him except to say that given he changed his mind about where he was born, I don't hold out too much hope for accuracy on his age either.
Although, to be fair,  it's only the death that would suggest he was born a few years earlier - and it is possible I have the wrong death, but I don't think so.

He married someone called Elizabeth who was born 1803 according to the 1841 census. I don't think I've found all their children yet, but the earliest child I've got was Ann born 1825 and the latest is Rececca born 1846. All the children were born in Overton as far as I can tell. Elizabeth died in 1849.

Thanks again,
Bev

Jan,

Sorry - I should have mentioned that one of Matthew's children was not baptised until 16 years after her birth which made her a problem to find. I hope this doesn't prove to be a family trait   Undecided

Thanks again,

Hi Bev

I have been to the Archives today and had a look for your Matthew in the Ellesmere baptisms from 1800 to 1805.  Unfortuately I couldn't see him there, but I would just add that some of the images were extremely feint and very hard to read.

Jan,

Thanks for taking the time to look- it's very kind of you.
Everything about this Butler family has been difficult to find- so this doesn't surprise me!

Thanks again,
Bev

Bev

Isn't it annoying when you hit a brickwall!!!!

Let me know if I can check out anything else for Matthew - I might just check out the Ellesmere baptisms again next time I go.  I did spend several hours at the Archives and by the end of my day everything seemed quite fuzzy Grin
