Alcester Railway Station
« on: Monday 19 June 06 11:18 UTC (UK) »

Looking for information on Alcester Railway Station, which apparently doesn't exist now.  My great grandad's sister was married to the Station Master and lived at the station in 1891.  His name was Frederick Jones and her name was Hannah nee Waters.

Warwick Records Office may have some information.  There is a new online records catalogue with search facility at http://archivesunlocked.warwickshire.gov.uk/DServe.exe?dsqApp=Archive&dsqCmd=Index.tcl

Thanks for that.  I did have that info in the other site that was recommended above.  I have also visited the station, or house as it is now, it's part of a new housing estate, shame really.

Thanks again

Thats ok. I used to live in Redditch & as you might know the train used to run from here to alceter & beyond. You can see the old blocked off tunnel if you go to Redditch station & you can still see where the line ran, especially on the dual carriage way from alcester to evesham. It ran where tesco is & where the hospital is today towards Studley.
Shame as you say & they call it progress?
Good luck in your search.

Hi Lowerloft

The station at  Alcester had two railway companies use it the Midland Railway( London Midland Scottish after 1923) and the GWR. I think the Midland was the main railway company but the GWR had running rights over its rails.

This link gives some photos and if you follow the links on the page some info on the Midland/GWR lines

http://www.warwickshirerailways.com/lms/alcester.htm

this site contains some names of station masters at Alcester
http://www.alcester.dial.pipex.com/localpast/occpap/posthist/rail.htm

Most info on railway employee service records is kept at the National Archives at Kew and it can be a bit hit and miss as to how much info is kept for each railway company. Sometimes all you can find is a name and service/pay number, other times lots of info.

This link is to the railway records at kew NA

hope some of this helps

:)Hi there I have just registered with this site as I am researching the Redditch to Evesham Railway also known as the Gloucester loop. It ran through Studley and Allcester. I would like to hear any stories or if you have any old photos to share Grin

Hello,

I don't have any info about it except  that I went there last year and although the station is still there, it's a residential house now with extentions in the middle of a housing estate.  I do have a photo but obviously of what it looks like now, if you'd like that I can send it, but it's on my old laptop and it'll take a while to move over.  I'm not a whizz with computers.

My great grandad's sister was married to a Frederick Jones who worked on the station, I was given to believe he was a Station Master at some point but I can't confirm that. Probably another of those myths and legends passed down!
