The 1841 census for Alloa has three possible James that match.

Thank you both for your replies. I'm inclined to think the one at Old Bridge is the right one because of the address. If it is, I've got a real puzzle on my hands - how is James related to the Kerrs and the Morgans?
My other problem is that James' grandparents married in 1824 so any daughter of theirs (ie James' mother) should have been born around this time or later, and the other two possibilies are too old. Plus neither of the children's name fit the naming pattern.
This could be interesting ;-)
Regards Jan

Yes, that's what I thought. Janet married John KEIR in 1862 - at first I thought that might be the connection, but the Robert KIRKWOOD living with her parents in 1851 is hers. So that leaves Jean but I can't find a marriage to a MITCHELL. Regards Jan
