Hi All,
I have been trying to get my family history site off the ground. It can be seen at http://wulliam.rootschat.net
I'm using Microsoft FrontPage and have a few questions - help would be greatly appreciated!!
1) I've received mixed opinion as to whether I should get pages validated. Should I - and if so then what is it???
2) Do pages need to be protected in some way in order to stop others messing with them?
3) I have tried various things to get a background on a page. It shows up on FrontPage but not after I've uploaded the file. I am using entirely lowercase without spaces.
I'm sure I'll have other queries too...
Kind regards - and thanks for reading.
William

I don't know whether you have FP 2000 of FP 2003 or even possibly FP 98, of which I have no experience. In the first 2 you have the ability to apply "themes". They will give you a variety of background choices and also matching graphics for page headings. You can see the effect of any of the themes instantly if you apply it to a page. It is entirely possible to have different themes from page to page but that usually looks ugly and jarring. Having chosen a theme then select "Shared Borders" and the same theme will be applied to all pages. I looked at your HTML and you have only Ice Blue background applied no theme. Tristan would be able to tell you whether the free web space you have on Rootschat will permit such large files. For an example of a Front Page web site using a constant theme please look at my commercial site www.southernprints.co.uk - the Amazon site is also put up in Front Page 2003. This discussion may become boring to most so I suggest you PM me if you have any further queries.

Hi Hackstaple,
thanks for your reply. I am using FP2000.
I have removed all themed backgrounds that I had applied as well as the blue background - simply because I am getting confused!! Since then I've had another go and will upload again later tonight and hope to get a better result.
I think I'll keep this discussion on the board - perhaps it shall benefit some other poor soul trying to get to grips with these things!
I wonder if anyone can help with my first two question??
Regards, William

Sorry - I have used Front Page for 6 years but have no idea what page validation is. Publishing to your web-site can only be performed by use of your own password. I could easily copy and amend your site on my own computer but still would have no method of publishing it your host. If you are worried that someone will do that and so use your research for their own tree then there is no way at all to prevent that from occurring. You cannot opt in FP 2000 for a specific background colour and then apply a theme by shared borders. In FP 2003 you can modify the colours within a style theme. Do you have a manual for FP 2000? If not, and if you live in the UK, I could post you the one I no longer use.

Hi William,
1) I've received mixed opinion as to whether I should get pages validated. Should I - and if so then what is it??? The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has set standards for various things on the web. If everybody follows these standards, then any browser should be able to display any webpage.
The crux lies in the "should". Even now, different browsers have a nasty habit of displaying some stuff slightly differently from others.
"To validate your pages" means to check whether they conform to the standards, in this case the HTML standards. There are various sites on the web which do this for you, you just tell them the address of your website.
Some browsers are more tolerant than others, and in general, if you are using a standard program, such as FrontPage, then there is no real need to validate. But if you write (or add) your own HTML code then it may be useful to know if it conforms, on the grounds the greatest number of browsers should then be able to display your pages without problems.
More on Validation here: Topic: HTML Validation Results?? http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,81770.0.html

Hi Bob,
thanks for the explanation of validation (I think I'll ignore it for the time being!) and for the two links - very helpful.
Kind regards, William

Hi again!
Things are progressing nicely - and whilst there's still a lot to be done I think I understand all of the basic basics. What I would like to do now is to make the likes of Google 'see' my site. I have registered my site with them but at the moment nothings happening when I search for my site on Google.
Is there anything I can do to make my site more visible to the outside world??
Thanks! William

Have a look at getting your website noticed in the tutorial:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,93490.msg724901.html#msg724901
It will take time for your site to be assimilated into the search world. When you googled, did you search the web or just UK pages? Rootschat sites are ".net" so seem come up better on google for "the web" rather than "uk". JULIAN

Wulliam - there are billions of sites out there so it takes time to be "noticed". Julian is right about it and the tips in that tutorial are valuable.

I have a site made using fp2003 http://fp.cotswan.plus.com Apart from some picture galleries done with Photoshop Elements
If you select a background file, you need to make sure this file is uploaded.
