Hello listers, I'm having great difficulty tracking my g-g-grandmother, Annie SMITH. In 1861 and subsequent censuses she gives her birthplace as Scotland, and her date of birth is about 1835. On her marriage certificate she gives her father as James SMITH, carrier. The 1841 census shows James SMITH, 40, carrier, with (presumably) wife Margaret, 38, and daugher Annie aged 5 in the village of Drumlithie. This is the most promising lead I have so far and I would be very grateful for any information, such as their presence or absence on later censuses, which could help me to know whether this is in fact the correct family, or even if it is not. Thanks very much, John

Sherlock,
Many thanks for your reply. Is there any possibility of finding out if any of the family were still there in 1851, 1861, or any record of a marriage for Annie or what became of parents James & Margaret? I have come across more than one James Smith & wife Margaret couple in the 1851 England census (Sorry I omitted to say in my first post that she, Annie, got married in Bethnal Green in Middlesex in 1854, though none of the siblings seem to be with them, though Annie was the youngest). Now here is what is probably a genealogical red herring: I notice you are researching Donald ANDREW from the Wester Highlands. In 1854 Annie married Frederick John ANDREW. His father was Henry John ANDREW baptised St Mary le Bow, London 1799. His parents were Richard ANDREW & Mary, which is as far back as I have got. Apart from Scotland, there were concentrations on ANDREW folk in Yorkshire & Cornwall. I have no idea of Richard's origins. The first son of Frederick John ANDREW & Annie SMITH was named James, the second son Ninian Stewart. Any information, suggestions etc. will be gratefully received, Kind regards, John
