Re NAA for Sue (Sparrett) and all
« on: Monday 26 June 06 05:59 UTC (UK) »

I just noticed this message at the NAA - so as Sue mentioned on a thread I now cannot find - it appears the process of digitising all WWI records is almost complete.

Digitising World War I service records: the National Archives no longer processes requests for digital copies of WW I service records (series B2455) and RAN record of service cards (series A6770). Images of these records will become available on this website over the next 6 months. We will continue to supply photocopies of the records – you can order them through this website.

I hope they upgrade their servers - some days the search just seems to sit and sit and sit

Hi Trish,
Slow...you should try working here!!  Grin  Apparently there is a plan to upgrade servers sometime this year, but I wouldn't hold my breath  Sad

ANyway, I copied the following off the staff intranet.  There wasn't a message about the info being secret, or copyright, so I think I am allowed to pass it on.  It might be helpful for people to know what is available and what the targets are for completion.

Cheers
Prue

Army Service Records for WW I (series B2455)

The Preservation project to re-folder and re-box, list at item level on RecordSearch and create a digital copy for placing on RecordSearch, is almost complete.

By the end of December 2005 all records (numbering some 377,000) had been:

- Re-foldered and re-boxed, and
- Listed at item level on RecordSearch

All records are in National Archives custody and are available for issue to the reading room and for [photo]copying by the DSR service.

Digital copies on RecordSearch
About 281,000 digital copies of records have been added to RecordSearch.

Digital copies of about 95,000 records that are not yet on RecordSearch are currently being retrieved from the contractor. The loading of these images will depend on the speed of retrieval. It is anticipated all images will be loaded before the end of November 2006.

Records that are yet to be loaded fall into the following surname ranges:

Surnames ‘A’ to ‘Cottam’
Surnames ‘X’, ‘Y’ and 'Z' (includes all surnames after ‘Woof R’)

The following common surnames:
Johnson and Johnston
Jones
King (as far as ‘King-Davies S’)
‘Mac’ -prefix surnames (from ‘Macadam’ to ‘Madden C’)
Martin (as far as ‘Martin-Smith H’)
‘Mc’ -prefix surnames (from ‘Mazzer’ to ‘McWilliam’)
Miller (from ‘Milham’ to ‘Millet C’)
Moore (from ‘Moore C’ to ‘Moore-Robinson J’)
Philips and Phillips (from Philip W’ to ‘Phillips-Gibson J’)
Robinson (from ‘Robins W’ to ‘Robley V’)
Scott (as far as ‘Scott-Young’)
Smith
Stephens (from ’Stephen’ to ‘Stephson’)
Stevens (from ‘Sterry’ to ‘Stevenson’)
Stewart
Taylor
Thomas
Thompson (as far as ‘Thompson-Boyd E’)
Thomson
Turner (from ‘Turnbull T’ to ‘Turnham H’)
Walker (as far as ’Walker-Young’)
Watson (from ‘Watling E’ to ‘Watt C’)
White
Williams
Wilson (as far as 'Wilson-Walker A')
Wood (from ‘Womsley A’)
Woods (as far as ‘Woodville J’)

Navy service cards for Petty Officers and Sailors, 1911–70 (series A6770)

Service cards for Petty Officers and Sailors who served with the Royal Australian Navy between 1911 and 1970 are undergoing a Preservation project to place a digital copy of all cards on RecordSearch.

Under the project the cards will be passed to an external contractor for digitising in batches of 100 boxes. The full project will consist of 6 batches (ie 6 x 100 boxes) and it is estimated by the project manager that cards will be out of custody for up to 3 weeks.

Listing of cards on RecordSearch
All cards are listed on RecordSearch.

Availability of cards
At 9 May 2006 the last batch of cards is due for return from the contractor by 12 May 2006.

A further batch of cards (from ‘Sumner’ to the end of the alphabet and a small quantity of scattered cards) have not been digitised under the current contract. This will be done later in 2006. Advice will be provided about unavailability of these cards at that time.

Availability of digital copies
Availability of digital copies for this series is:

Surnames
A to Coulson Available – Digital copy already on RecordSearch (result of internal project)
Coulson to Sumner Available after 12 May - Digital copies will be loaded
Sumner to end of alphabet and other scattered surnames Available - will be digitised later in 2006

Thanks for that alert Trish.  It will be wonderful to have all those documents readily viewable.
Prue,  Nice little bit of inside info.!!  So interesting to understand the process.
I am waiting on digitisation of an application for patent for a trade mark registration - for  a CORDIAL BOTTLE - of all things.
It's been about 3 weeks,  What is the usual. 6?
My Plummer ancestors opened a fizzy drinks factory in about 1876 in South Melb..  It did well for 20 yrs or so.
Srangely, one day a couple of years, after she had started her family research, my cousin was in a 'junk' shop in country  Victoria, when she just turned round and right there in front of her eyes was a fully embossed Plummer Cordial bottle !!
She couldn't believe it. Probably the last one still in one piece.
Ah Well, we wait and wait.
Sue

Thanks for the update Prue - I did put in an "examine" request awhile ago - maybe I'll be lucky like Sue & it will be there  Grin  Grin  (I just need to check out who it was  Angry  )

It's an impressive task - and very well done - I have so many family on there - my favorite is the man who put his age up for WW1  and down for WW2 - They caught him after 6 months in WW2 & he was discharged!

Not sure if it's weird or amazing - just got an email from naa telling me that my man whom I wanted digitised (& I couldn't remember who he was) - was in group two - already digitised & waiting to go on line - but she couldn't advise exactly when this would be.

It was my husband's great uncle - so will just have to wait and see (I could pay for a photocopy, but I think I will wait  Smiley  Smiley )

Tomorrow or the next day I bet.

It's worth the wait.  Just so real and Take-you-back-there if you know what I mean.

Happy to help, gals  Cheesy

Unfortunately things like the trademark registration are kept in huge old books, and they're not able to be digitised by the "ordinary" people who do stuff like files and personnel dossiers.    Requests for unusual items have to go to the photographic services people, and they are hideously understaffed, underfunded and overworked  Cry  I work closely with them, retrieving and setting up items for them to photograph.

It takes a while, but at least (for now) it's free!  I think in the not-too-distant future they are planning to charge a fee for getting stuff digitised, so if you can get in now, you should.

Dear Prue. Thank you for that.
I feel quite sad and at the same time very grateful when I read about the work at the NAA.
We are so lucky to have such a brilliant resource and to think of those people working away to bring our ancestors back to us.  It is obviously a highly under-acknowledged task and I for one would like to offer up
THREE CHEERS FOR THE NAA!!!!!Sue
