???I have nearly driven myself bonkers looking for the baptism of Sarah Gates, who married Thomas Fletcher at Rushden in 1741. She died in December 1801, at the age of 96, so was born about 1705. I can't find her baptism in Rushden nor in St John the Baptist, Peterborough, or in several parishes around Rushden. If anyone knows of a cluster of Gates in this general area, I would be most grateful to know. Even better - if, by any chance, anyone comes across her, I shall jum ???p for joy. With thanks, Alwynne

Have you tried Earls Barton yet? A couple of Mary Gates living there were married 1728 and 1730. Mary Gates widow married John Beeby a baker in EB 1728 Mary Gates of EB married Richard Barkee of EB 1730 in Wellingborough And John Gates of Great Brickhill married Mary Barnes at EB in 1707 This might be the same Mary who married John Beeby.

No, I haven't, and thank you very much for that, as it's not a place I had heard of. I may get lucky this time! Cheers, Alwynne

To go back a bit, what is the connection with 'St John the Baptist Peterborough', if she was married etc in Rushden? I know P'boro is in Northants, but only technically. It was until comparatively recently the Soke of Peterborough, which was like a mini-county of its own, and it is really more like East Anglia. Within my lifetime, the C of E created a diocese of Brixworth (a very ancient church near Northampton) with its own bishop, to serve the west of the county.

I only mentioned Peterborough because I had already looked at it, searching for the other part of this chain, the Cunworth/Conworths. There were certainly Gates in Peterborough, but the only connection I can find to Sarah is that her proctor when she lodged her renunciation re her husband's estate was one William Gates of Peterborough. It is likely that he was a family member, but I have nothing to support that. Sorry if I mislead anyone. Cheers, Alwynne
