Hi
My g.grandfather William Whittaker was lodging with the McMullen family as a 19 year old ships labourer in 1901 at 1 Willisons Lane, Port Glasgow.
Is there any way I can find out if he was there in 1900 or before please?
In 1905 he was still in Port Glasgow having married there.
Many thanks for any help.

Hi Cranstone and Kellyfamily18 I have looked at the census it definitely says Wallisons Lane I have searched through some of the maps of the area and cannot find it there is no Wilsons Lane listed either there is a Wilson Street a Wallace street and found references in the 1861 census of people living in Willisons Lane but cannot find that on a map either it may be one of those streets and the name has changed over the years Elaine

Hello Kelly and Elaine
Many thanks for trying to fatham this road out for me.
I can only presume perhaps it's been transcribed wrongly?
Probably the same rason why I can't find him in 1891 - he's been mis-spelt!!!
Thanks again
Regards

Hi Kelly and Elaine
Many thanks for your help. I looked up William on the 1901 Irish census but I couldn't get the actual page up BUT on the info. section it has Willison's Lane!
So I have changed the Wallison's to Willison's on my post.
Thank you again for trying to help me find out more.
Regards

Hi
Thank you for the map - I have been able to find the gasworks, Robert Street, St. Marys Church and the viaduct but not Willison's Street? Can you direct me rom those places please? The narrative was interesting too thank you.

1 Willison's Lane was off Princes Street in Port Glasgow town centre. If you are familiar with the town centre as it stands today, then Willison's Lane would have run just to the rear of the Peacocks and Moneystretchers stores, infront of the railway station. My great grandparents lived at 1 Willison's Lane for many many years, and my father who was familiar with Willisons Lane, pointed out the location to me a few years ago..
I think it is most likely a mis-transcription of Willison's Lane.
I couldnt find Willisons Lane on the map either supplied by tootsiepie, and I am familiar with the area.
I dont think it would be a mis-transcription of Wilson STREET, which is further out from the town centre, towards the Glasgow Road. Hope this is of some help to you.
Gill
