1841 census (or early info) CARTER: COMPLETE thanks!
« on: Friday 16 June 06 13:05 BST (UK) »

Can anyone help with the 1841 census for St Peter's, St Alban's, Hertfordshire please?

I think this is where my CARTER family should be hiding.  Here they are, as seen on the IGI (children thought to have been born in St Alban's, as they were baptised there)

Thomas CARTER b unknown @ unknown
Elizabeth b abt 1796 St Alban's
Elizabeth b abt 1822
Sarah b abt 1823
Charles b abt 1824
William b abt 1826
Harriet b abt 1828
James b abt 1830
Henry b abt 1833 - direct line
George b abt 1836

Some of the above found together on 1851 HO107/1713/177/32

and 1861 RG9/829/29/3 St Albans, Herts

I have Henry on later censuses.

I would also be interested in what happened to Thomas, who appears to have died before 1851, where Elizabeth is Head.

Many thanks for any input and all effort expended!

Hi

Sorry I can't help with the 1841 but from the Herts burial index there is a Thomas Carter buried 25th Jan 1846 aged 52, St Peters. The only Carter buried in St Peters. !!

From BMD the reference is March Qtr St Albans 6/306

Hope this is of some help.

That is great Maddie - thank you!

I don't suppose he married in St Peter's too?

I can't find anything on the IGI that looks likely.

Thanks very much

Your welcome,

I've just had a quick look at the BVRI & there is no marriage there for him.

I suppose there's a chance they weren't born or married in County. Hopefully you will get a clue with the 1841.

Thanks for looking Keith  Smiley

That has thrown a bit of a spanner in the works, though!

Some of the older children are at home (quite possible, as they may be in service, but both Sarah and Elizabeth are at home later).

Also I don't have a John or a Mary baptised for this couple - yet all the other children are baptised at St Peter's.  There is just about time for a couple of others to have been squeezed in, but where were they baptised?

On balance - I am not sure!

Must have a look at the map to see where Sawbridgeworth is...

kind regards, Arranroots  Wink

Aha!  Peter has just posted - yes, that is definitely them!!  Thanks so much both.  Whoohooo!!

Hi Arranroots,

I searched the St.Peters Parish Records and can confirm the following baptisms of children of Thomas and Elizabeth Carter  ...

Sarah  25Oct1820   -   Elizabeth  02Jun1822   -  Charles  07Mar1824   -   William  14May1826   -    Harriet  06Apr1828   -   James  10Oct1830   -   HENRY  05May1833   - George  31Jul1836.

I also found the following entry at St.Peters   ...

THOMAS CARTER  of this parish and ELIZABETH HAMERTON of this parish were married by Banns on 21st November 1818.   Witness James Payne (Church official as he appears to witness most marriages at this time)
Thomas and Elizabeth made their marks.

I hope this will restore family harmony.

Regards   ...   Peter
