Bassetts in Hunts
« on: Tuesday 27 June 06 10:49 BST (UK) »

Are you researching the Bassett family?  If so, can you please help me to find the parents of my ancestor Mary Bassett?  She was born c1785, probably in Spaldwick, where she was resident at the time of her marriage.

Mary married William Farey at Spaldwick Church, 01.01.1798, and was the mother of James, Sarah, Joseph, John & Hannah.  She died in Ellington in 1810 and was buried there 20.04.1810.

William married another Mary in 1811, a Mary Green of Swavesey, and had other children.

Although I have lots of information about Mary Bassett's descendants, I know nothing of her history before her marriage.  Can you help?

Hi Gill

There are very few Bassetts on the Hunts Marriage Index post 1754. One in 1765 in Abbots Ripton, then in 1767 in Spaldwick between William and Ann Warner, followed in 1783 in Spaldwick between Ann widow and John Sharp.

With Mary's marriage in 1798 I'd put her birth a bit earlier than 1785, probably before 1780.

If I were a betting man I'd wager the odd shekel on Mary being the daughter of William and Ann!

1701- 1754 there are only two Basset marriages in Hunts, both females, but in Spaldwick and Gt Catworth, so it does seem as though they were a fairly (nearly typed fairy!) established name in the vicinity.

I'm thick! Forgot burials.

All bar 5 Hunts burials were at Ramsay. One of the others was at Leighton Bromswold, three at Spaldwick and one at Ellington.

17 Feb 1771 John at Spaldwick
21 Nov 1780 John Wotfild Bassit at Spaldwick
5 Nov 1781 Wm at Spaldwick
9 Sept 1783 John aged 40 at Ellington

But the previous one to 1771 was in 1635, so perhaps I was optimistic to call them an established local family!

OK, back to medieval stuff. Wish I'd listened in my Latin lessons at school! I can manage 3 or 4 words.

Regards

David

Hi David

On the ball, as usual!  This is very useful information.  Thank you so much.

You are probably right about Mary's birth year.  1785 was really a guess, and perhaps not a good one, since her husband was born in 1776.  Although I have her burial date (which I'm sure you found for me in the first place), I don't have her age at death.  Perhaps it was't recorded.

Certainly William and Ann look a real possibility, and Ann's re-marriage follows neatly on from William's death.

I might be able to help a bit with the Latin.  No promises, mind you, but I did do A level Latin at school all those many years ago, and have recently been translating RC baptism records.  You could send me a sample, and I'll see what I can do.

Best wishes and thanks again,

Gill

You're a star Gill. Give me 10 mins. It's an IPM from the 1400s.

William and Ann seem to have been the only game in town, so it seems very likely that Mary belonged to them.

Hooray. It's raining. Big thunder storm. First rain since the beginning of May. Hope it rains all night, the garden's parched.

All the best

David
