1837 and ancestry
« on: Wednesday 28 June 06 14:36 BST (UK) »

Hi all - quick question please .  I will probably be posting a lot of quick questions as I've realised I have huge gaps in my knowledge - oh well were all learning  Wink Cool

Does Ancestry contain the same info as the 1837-online site?

If so is this info available on all subscriptions rates - ie: I pay monthly to Ancestry.co.Uk

Many thanks for your time

The GRO indexes on Ancestry are free to view whilst those at 1837 online are pay to view.

I believe that the images on both sites are indentical to those available at the Family Records Centre, Islington.  However, I believe that both databases which are supposed to be complete, occasionally have problems with missing records.

As to census records, these are provided on a pay to view basis on both sites, though Ancestry contains all censuses 1841 -1901 whilst 1837 online only contains 1861 and  1891.

It is also probably worth mentioning that whilst Ancestry gives unlimited access, 1837 debit your account every time you view an image, though it is free to search.

Just to add that although 1837online only has the 1861 and 1891 censuses at the moment, they are excellent value.

Thanks very much.  I now pay monthly to Ancestry but it seems that I nearly allways have trouble finding my people on the GRO indexes.  Whilst when I used to pay on 1837 I seemed to be able to find who I was looking for.  Maybe I'm not searching efficiently  Undecided

Many thanks again for your time.

I use both sites and I still find the BMD on 1837 more accurate than Ancestry.  At the weekend I found 5 bmds on 1837 I could not find on Ancestry.

I know others disagree with me, but I am going by my own experiences.

British Origins have the 1841 and 1871 census records - not all counties but more are being added.

I paid about GBP22 for a 12 month subscription, and you can access the census records as often as you like without paying anything extra, I think that is excellent value for money.

IF they havent got your county up yet, you might need to wait until they do, before you subscribe.

Hi Fiona

I use ancestry because I have a 12 months subscription.  They have some ghastly errors in their indexing of the GRO indexes but you can use the options to browse a year, then a quarter, then a letter - e.g. you can browse all B's for Dec 1933 - if your search does not return the correct page to check.

As each incorrect access doesn't cost any extra, the fact that I look at many wrong entries while browsing only costs me time - not money  Smiley
