Hi!

Would somebody kindly search the 1841 census (or any others thereafter) for my Great (x4) Grandfather:

Robert HOPKINS, a Labourer & Fishmonger, born about 1800 in Shaftesbury or Motcombe. His wife was named Mary, and they had at least 3 children all born in either Shaftesbury or Motcombe: John b. 1830, Mary Ann b. 1833 & Sarah Jane b. 1837.

Thanks!

Ryan.

Hi Ryan,

I found this is the 1841 census for Shaftsbury.  The names all seem to tie up but Robert's birth date is a bit out, even considering the rounding down of ages in 1841:

Bell Street, Holy Trinity, Shaftsbury
Ref: HO107/295/1 f15 p24

Robert HOPKINS, 35, Lab, Y
Mary ditto, 45, Y
John ditto, 10, Y
Mary ditto, 7, Y
Sarah ditto, 4, Y

Y = Born in county

Al

Hi agian,

From the 1861 & 1871 censuses it looks like he married his neighbour's daughter Mary Ann HELLIER and went on to have 2 more children; Joseph (b. abt. 1853) & Catherine (b. abt. 1856).

Will post the details later.

Hi Ryan,

I suspect "Daughter in Law" probably means step daughter i.e. Ann STAINER was Mary Ann HELLIER's daughter by a previous marriage.

Thanks Al, that's what I thought too Smiley

Alli - Mary Ann Hopkins was born into Robert's first marriage to Mary Adams. They also had John (my Great (x3) Grandfather) & Sarah Jane who were baptised in Motcombe.

Cheers.

Hi
I live just outside Shaftesbury & am happy to look up any graves etc.
Layford lane could possibly be LAYTON Lane - which still stands. Plus st.Peters Church,if you'd like a photo via email

Hi Alison.

That's a very kind offer. I would appreciate any info regarding any Hopkins graves, as the chances are they're related to me. My Hopkins ancestors mainly lived in the St. James' area, so most would probably be buried there.
My main interests would be Robert Hopkins mentioned in this topic, his first wife Mary (buried in Enmore Green) & his second wife also named Mary, and Robert's parents William & Love Hopkins. Love is buried in St. James' churchyard.

I would be very interested in a picture of St. James' Church & Layton Lane.

Thanks allot.

Ryan.
