High Temple Locks would have been part of the Forth and Clyde Canal, a lock being a section of a canal closed off by gates, within which a vessel may be raised or lowered by the raising or lowering of the section's water level. If you go to: www.waterscape.com/boating/pdfs?id = 2590 you will see Temple Locks mentioned.
