Wetherden/Wyverstone query
« on: Sunday 03 July 05 14:17 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

I don't know Suffolk at all, and wondered if someone who knew the area can help.

On the 1851 census of Old Newton John Clamp's wife, Hannah (nee Rice) gives her place of birth as Wyverstone.  (I have not actually seen this, but have been given a transcription from a cousin).

I have been trying to find the birth of Hannah Rice on the IGI and there is one which matches the year in Wetherden.  On the map Old Newton, Wetherden and Wyverstone are all fairly close to one another, although Wetherden is closer to O.N.  Is it possible that Wyverstone parish would come under Wetherden?

If not, back to the drawing board.   Sad

Grateful for any ideas,
Diane

The IGI has two relevant entries for Wetherden, both for baptism of children to parents Isaac Rice and Mary Francis.  One is Ann Rice 21 October 1781 and the other Hannah Rice 9 August 1794.  Both are patron submissions, rather than controlled extractions from parish registers, so whichever one you think is yours needs checking in the parish register before you believe it.

Christening in Wetherden is not inconsistent with birth at Wyverstone.  They are two separate events, and families didn't always use the nearest church.  It could be a matter of convenience, or preference, or earlier family ties with a minister or a church.  And the two places are only 4 miles apart.

Then maybe what Hannah put in the 1851 census is what she thought, rather than knew.  At that time people weren't often asked where they were born, and they usually didn't keep records to tell them.  So if say Hannah was born in Wyverstone, but the family moved to Wetherden when she was very young, maybe she remembered being brought up in Wetherden and thought she was born there.

Thanks for your replies.

You're right Hugh.  It looks like the only way to be sure may be to somehow, sometime look at the parish registers.  I have been told that John and Hannah married on 15 May 1812 at Old Newton, so maybe the marriage entry will give more details.

Looks like I may have to persuade my husband we need a short break in Suffolk!

Thanks again,
Diane

Hi Diane

Or......you could try the Suffolk Surnames List!  There are volunteers offering lookups from the Old Newton and the Wyverstone Registers!

Marriage records at this date do not give much information however.  You will not have father's names, but you will be able to find out their maritial status, and whether or not they were "of the parish".  You will also have marriage witnesses.

Blanche Clamp was my grandmother.

How are you related to this line?
I have a photo of John Clamp if you don't already have one.
Would love to chat,
