Hi Eric,
What kind of info are you looking for? I have some of those surnames in my tree - although no direct link that I can see at first glance. If I can be of any help, I'll do what I can
Cheers, Clare

Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure what info to send. Each of the names listed is as far back as I have managed to trace before coming to a stop. Any info about individuals or families is what I'm after. The reason I have come to a stop is because most of my work is done on the internet but, this becomes more difficult once you go back to the 18th century.
If you let me know what you need I'd be happy to send.
Regards
Eric

Hi there,
Do you know if any of the couples that you listed have any children? This might help you try and work out the potential parents of the couples by way of the Scots naming pattern. Also, have you found them on any census records? 1841 onwards is available on Scotlands People, and there is some coverage on Freecen.
Also, did any of them libe until 1855 or beyond? If you can find death certificates for any of them, that may also help.
Cheers, Clare

Clare,
I've tried many various avenues without success. I'll try one at a time.
John Elliot (1846) married Elizabeth Davidson (1847) in 1875 at Crailing Johns siblings were Joseph (1832), Helen (1833), Margaret (1835) and Jane (1836) Elizabeth had a sister Euphemia (1851)
John's father was George Elliot (about 1811) who married Isabel Fairbairn (about 1811) in 1830 at Crailing.
my puzzle is who was George's father.
George gives his age as 30 in the 1841 census. There was a George Elliot christened in 1813 with parents William and Isabel Stevenson (married 1812) There was also a George Elliot christened in 1806 with parents Joseph and Margaret Gray (married 1801)
The names Joseph and Margaret fit the family naming tradition but William and Isabel fit the dates better.
If you can help I would be very grateful. If not I can send you lots of other unsolved puzzles.
Many thanks for your interest
Eric

Hi there,
My gut reaction would be to go with the one that fits the naming pattern. I don't hold too much by ages given on census' as people are often hazy about their dates of birth. In addition, ages in the 1841 census were rounded to the nearest 5 years, so he may well have been 34, but they age rounded down.
I hope this helps a little.
Cheers, Clare

Hello Margaret
If they are the same then we may be related.
John Forsythe (b. 1810) married Helen Learmond (b.1815) in 1842.
Children Ann (My Great Grandmother) George, Janet, John, Mary, Agnes, Elizabeth and Helen.
I know nothing about John and Helen's parents - If you have anything I would love to hear from you.
Regards
Eric

Margaret,
Is Elizabeth your Gt Grandmother ? Does John's death cert contain any useful information.
Whereabouts are you ? I live in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire.
My mother was Annie Elliot, daughter of Joseph Elliot and Annie Temple. Annie Temple was the daughter of James Shiel and Ann Forsythe.
Regards
Eric

Margaret,
Our Gt Grandmothers were sisters. I think that makes us 3rd cousins. After 2 years of searching you are the first blood relative I have found.
I would be very grateful if you would let me have scans of any documents you have. Do you have any info on the other 6 siblings ?
