Eric,
way back up this chain was a bit about an Isabel FAIRBAIRN and a George ELLIOT.
I've a note that an Isabella ELLIOT, illiterate, was the informant for the death of her brother James FAIRBAIRN in Jun 1859 at Malt Barns, Kelso.
James was single, 42, the s/o John F. (farm serv - dec) and Helen ms DODDS (dec).  Buried Churchyard of Kelso.
Is this the same one?
Not one of mine that I know of, just info I've collected along the way.

LornaHen,

You're a star.
Yes, they are mine
I have very little info about the Fairbairn / Dodds side of the family and you have added a brilliant piece to the jig-saw
The Kelso connection may be a vital link to there origins
If you have any other info I would love to hear from you

Many thanks

Hi Eric,
only the 1841 1851 and 1861 census transcripts from ancestry which show
1841 George/Isable living at Whitton, Morebattle with Joseph, Helen, Margaret, Jane and John
1851 George/Isabella living Ploughland Farm Crailing George 42 b Eckford, and Isabella 40 b Minto with Helen b Crailing; Margaret, Jane John and George all b Morebattle
1861 Isabella (no George) with Margaret, Jane and John.  By 1861 Isabella thinks she was born Lilliesleaf.
The 1851 b Minto matches my guess at which was her brother James in 1851.
There's a James of the right age, born Minto, as a servant with James and Euphemia WALDIE at Linton Mill, Linton.

I take it you've confirmed that this is your Isabella FAIRBAIRN?  She survived well into civil reg. so her dth cert should be available.
George however may well have died prior, sometime between 1851 and 1861, most likely at Crailing.
I'd go for the Joseph and Margaret as his parents if you can't find his dth cert to confirm it, an 1813 bap. sounds too late for this George, 1809ish Eckford.

Hello LornaHen,

Yes, I'm certain they are mine.
Isabella died 27 Nov 1893 at Bowden (Parish) aged 83
Her parents were John FAIRBAIRN and Helen DODDS
But I've been unable to find find any other trace of them.
Your lead on James at Kelso might produce something new.

Many Thanks

Eric

Hello Cal,

Nice to hear from you
I have a John and James Shiel
I also have an Isabella Dagleash and Isabella Stevenson but sadly the other names and dates don't fit so I don't think we are on the same line.
I'll keep it all in mind and if I discover anything I'll let you know

Regards

Looking for any information on the following...

William ELLIOT (1796) married Isabel STEVENSON (1783) in 1812 - Southdean
James FAIRBAIRN married Ann WALKER in 1806 - Melrose
John SHIEL (1770) married Janet SCOTT (1774) in 1795 ...
John FORSYTHE (1810) married Helen LEARMOND (1815) in 1842 - Stitchel

Eric Kershaw

Eric,
A bit long after your posting, but better late than never.
Can't help with parents of those shown, but can add that Andrew FAIRBAIRN, son of James FAIRBAIRN and Ann WALKER died in Greenock, Renfrew in 1890 (married Marion FOREST), and was living in Portobello 1851-1871.
His age at death was 73, which is a tad out for the 1813 Andrew I had noted for this couple, but may be one and the same person, or a 3rd Andrew.
Always interested in Melrose connected FAIRBAIRNs, and have recently realised that one of my FAIRBAIRNs married a Joan FORSYTH, so your message caught my eye - again (I've just realised I added some info on a different line above!)

From naming pattern of the children for James and Ann that I know about, I'd expect his parents to be an Andrew and Isabel, but don't have any likely candidates in view for you.

Hello Eric and all out there researching Elliots, Eliots or Ellots,

Just information on a web site about the Elliots of the Border.
This is called the Ellot Clan (Ellot is an old spelling of Elliot) and lists loads of Elliots - if you can work them all out. They have not got all the Elliots listed but have loads and some of the information is not quite right but it is a starting point for research.

http://home-2.tiscali.nl/~cb002201/ellot_clan.htm

If that doesn't work then google 'Ellot Clan'

Getting back into my family history stuff again ... I will have a look and see what I have in the Shiel side ... most certainly I think we are linked some where with those names

Also do your Robson's happen to be from Southdean area

Hi Margaret,

Saw your query above, my OH has 3 g grandparents Robson who where in Southdean.

Alexander Robson m Margaret Weir. They were both born and married in Oxnam (not far from Crailing) but were in Southdean in the 1841 and 1851 census. Have a bit of info if these names fit into your tree.
