Hi
Wonder if anyone can help me on a John Grieveson from Easington born 1814. He married a Mary Heslop in 1834 in Bishopwearmouth. Would like to find anything on his family or possible families.

Hi Janette,
I was wondering how far you'd got with your researches into John Grieveson of Easington. My connection is via his eldest daughter Margaret, who married Thomas Garside in 1860. Did you ever find out who John's parents were?
Best wishes
Paul

I could not find John in my transcripts of Easington the one that starts 1813 but there is a John Grieveson born 27 Jul 1811, baptised 13 Oct 1811 1st son of Robert Grieveson, labourer, native of Witton Gilbert, by his wife Margaret daughter of Benjamin Collon (or Collen) native of Wolviston.
There are two later siblings Robert 7 Aug 1814 and William 16 Mar 1817.

Hi Janis,
Many thanks for taking the trouble to look this up for me. I'm not entirely sure that the John Greaveson you have is the one I'm looking for but it's a distinct possibility.
If you search the name Grieveson (or any of its myriad spelling variations: Greaveson, Grievson, Greevson etc) in any Census you see that this name is almost exclusively confined to North East England - especially Co Durham. As you know, this can be either a blessing or a curse for family history researchers!
The censuses all spell John's surname differently but they're consistent in suggesting a birth year of 1814, so although the difference is not great I think this tends to point to the entry you located as a different John Grieveson. Moreover, the Census documents consistently give the birthplace of the John Grieveson I'm looking for as Easington, which is some distance from Witton Gilbert and hard to confuse. On the other hand, a very inclusive search of the 1851 Census for all people born in Witton Gilbert produced a number of Grievesons (and variants) but not a John born in 1811, so he had either died young or is the one I have for 1814.
The best clue might be the fact that your John had a mother named Margaret and the one I'm looking for called his first born daughter Margaret - usually a good clue in this period. They could be one and the same!
Best wishes
Paul
