Chiltons around Rolleston
« on: Wednesday 08 July 09 14:35 UTC (UK) »

+Could anybody possibly help
I understand one of my ancestors was born in Rolleston Nottingham  around 1790.
His name was John Chilton who joined the 3rd Dragoon Guards and was a  Troop S. Major.  I believe  his friend was a Joseph Gillson who also joined the 3rd Dr. Guards.
and lived around the same area (20 mile radius)

lizdb - thanks for email.
Not right one this time unfortunately.    My John's wife was Esther, was a widow in 1851 so John must have died between 41-51.  I do know he was a Barrack Manager, Pensioner when died.  It was on a Military List that mentioned a John Chilton born in Rolleston.
Whilst travelling, Ireland/England, his wife stayed in Manchester.  I do not know what area John died, but cannot find anything for M/cr.
Thank you

Hi
Esther was on the 1851 census living at Bradford Rd. Ancoats with her sister Susanna Walker and family
On the 1861 census again with sister at 106 Ridgeway St. New Cross, both Manchester.   Her death was 08.03.1866 age 67.  She came from Rostherne, Cheshire.
At the moment I think that the Military at Kew would be the best place, knowing a little of his service, though no service number.
Unfortunately I live up north.

Ok got her in 1851 now

HO107 2226 846 13
157 Bradford Rd Manchester

Willam walker 37 warehouseman
Susannah 37 Grocer   bn Cheshire
William 9
Frances 5
John Hamnet? 1
Esther Chilton sis in law widow 53 bn Cheshire
John Chilton 25 bn Ireland
Esther 21 bn Coventry
William 18 bn Bristol
Thomas 15 bn Ireland.

In 1841 the two younger children, William age 8 (not bn in county) and Thomas 5 (bn Ireland) are in Rostherne, Cheshire with the family of Hamblet Moyses? I really cant make out the surname. But looking at the Christian name Hamblet, and seeing that appear as middle name for one of Susanna Walkers children, I do wonder if these two boys are with their maternal grandparents, i.e  Esther and Susannah's parents.
HO107 94 12 Rostherne.

Thank you
Esther's family name is Massey and came from Rosthere going back three generations at least. (family search.org) She was one of  c13 children. sounds possible for the two boys to be with the grandparents.
Perhaps she had taken the two eldest to Ireland around 1841!!!! otherwise they would have been on a census somewhere!!!

I have the details of the children plus birth cert. from Ireland for John.

I knew William was born in Bristol but that is about all I knew, no dates or areas. William is my husband's gr.gr.grandfather.

I had originally thought John came from Bristol until I got the possible  Nottingham connection on a Military list.  John may have been involved in the Bristol Riots!!!

According to her chr on IGI Esthers parents WERE Hamnet and MAry - so yes it does look like 2 youngest are with grandparents.

I have found information on the Massey's family but am still interested to find where/when John was born and died.  He may even have died in Ireland!!!!

I don't know where you get your information, but the Chiltons in Rolleston and Fiskerton - may have had family born around 1790, perhaps brothers or sisters.    Where would I be able to obtain that?
I suppose parish registers!

Again I think it might give me details at Kew.
Many thanks

Do you have census access?

I just looked at Chiltons in Nottmshire in 1841, and some came up in Rolleston.
When I looked at the image it was actually Fisketon - which only went on to a few pages, so I flicked thorugh them and saw at least two Chilton families there.

Ancestry is available at most libraries if you dont have a subscription to any of the sites whereby you can see the censuses. Might be worth you going and having a look.

Also have you checked the IGI? www.familysearch.org
