Can anyone please help me find the record of the birth of Elizabeth Ann Heritage around 1873 in Kington, possibly in the workhouse. Her mother was Mary Ann Heritage. (There is a possibility that the mother, Mary Ann, entered the workhouse as Mary Ann Davies. There was a Mary Ann Davies aged 5,at this workhouse in 1861 with her sister Sophia Davies, both later surnamed Heritage). I am tracking back from the 1881 census where I found Mary Ann Russell 28, born Brynmawr, Brecs., married to George Russell, 42, Agric. Labr.,born and living in Pershore, Worcs. They had a 2 year old son, John Russell and 8 year old Elizabeth Ann Heritage described as "wife's daughter", born in Kington, Hereford.

none (yet) transcribed in FreeBMD - in fact only Worcestershire (ie not Hereford) shows that surname in that period (as yet transcribed ...)
and no female Davies to a male Heritage marriage yet transcribed...
Have a go - http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/
btw - Kington or Knighton ?
Failing that - I guess its GRO registers that need to be searched.
(Mary Ann certainly married George Russell using the name Heritage...)

Thank you. Can I access GRO registers online? My searches go back to my great grandmother Sophia Heritage born 1856, in Garnfach, Mon. (near Brynmawr, Brecs.) Mary Ann Heritage was her sister. I think they were abandoned "on a bridge near Abergavenny" according to family oral history. on the 1891 census Sophia gives her place of birth as Kington, Hereford. Other censuses say Garnfach. Sophia had 3 children out of wedlock before marrying my great grandfather James Jenkins in 1884 in Abergavenny register office. Herefordshire records office told me the Kington workhouse records are not in good condition. I was hoping to discover when the girls were taken in and when discharged. I was told that on the 1861 census both girls had their mother's surname Davies and that they had come from the Llangattock area of Brynmawr. Sophia was in the Abergavenny area by the 1881 census living with 2 illegitimate children, as housekeeper to a 55 year old waggoner, William Jenkins. (I haven't yet found that he is related to me!) My father often said that we had relatives in Pershore. (As a child he thought they said Persia!) On Sophia's birth certificate her parents are given as William Heritage and Harriet Davies , the latter from Garnfach. I haven't found a marriage for them. William died of smallpox aged 30 in 1856 when Sophia was 2 months old. I am waiting for her mother's death certificate to arrive any day now. I think she died in the Dec. quarter of 1856. Sorry about this ramble, but Sophia's history fascinates me. Marion from Norwich

Hi Marion - no need to apologise - tis indeed fascinating .... excellent that you have all that information, it brings them to life rather than just a name on a page ...
someone else has posted the Kington RO phone number - that will be as quick as spending time and money on GRO searching .....
you can do this at www.1837online.com
www.familyrelatives.org
and www.Ancestry.co.uk
