Shropshire parishes c. 1790 & IGI
« on: Wednesday 05 July 06 20:18 BST (UK) »

I am trying to establish whether I have got the correct ancestor born between 1790  & 1795. The 1851 census shows Jane Leek as 57 years old and place of birth 'Felton'. I think this must be West Felton, since I know that 3 of her children were born there. Now, I can find a marriage on the IGI between William Leek and Jane Dod in 1811 in Ruyton-XI-Towns. This would make her a little young (17) but maybe her age on the census is understated anyway. Ruyton certainly seems feasibly close to West Felton.

On searching for the birth of Jane the first problem is that the IGI's christening records for West Felton don't start until 1810, so presumably Jane's birth must have been recorded in some nearby parish. A search for the whole county gives 4 matches - 2 in Hodnet, 1 in Hop(e)say and 1 in Westbury.
One of the Jane Dods born in Hodnet seems to have married a John Delves, but going off the parents names and subsequent family names, the one born in 1790 in Hodnet seems the most likely.

Apologies for this lengthy preamble, but my question is whether anyone with knowledge of the Shropshire parishes around 1790 could advise me on whether it seems feasible that someone born around West Felton at that time would have been Christened in Hodnet. Any advice would be  welcome! I have actually tried looking on the 1851 census for other people born around 1790 giving their place of birth as West Felton and then looking for their christenings on the IGI. Results have been inconclusive!

Thanks!

Thanks for your efforts, Pete - I will compare your info with what I have gleaned from the IGI. My William Leek was born in Ellesmere. From memory his age was given as 70 on the 1851 census, but 55 on the 1841 census. I believe that his is the IGI baptism entry shown for 24th January 1779.
Thanks again.
