JACKSON -Bury St Edmunds
« on: Thursday 06 July 06 00:23 UTC (UK) »

I am trying to find information about my 3 x Great Grandfather Thomas JACKSON, who according to the 1841 census was born around 1812 in Bury St Edmunds.  He married a woman named Matilde or Matilda who was born in Mendham around 1807.

Their first child was born in Maidenheads and the family settled in Chelsea in London, this suggests they moved away from Suffolk, presumably soon after marrying.

Any information on Thomas's birth and marriage and his parents, would be appreciated as my research is restricted by the fact that I live in New Zealand.

Many Thanks

Hi Dave

The 1841 census does not actually give birthplaces, but I note that the family are in Chelsea in 41 and in 51, still in Chelsea,  their birthplaces are as you describe.

I cannot find a marriage for Thomas and Matilda on the Suffolk Marriage Index 1813-1837, which rather suggests that the couple were married outside of the county. In 1851, their eldest child is 15, and born as you say in Maidenhead, Berkshire, which would indicate a marriage circa 1835 possibly in that county.

I do not know of anyone who currently offers lookups from the Bury St Edmunds PR's, but you might get lucky and someone who is going to the SRO may be willing to check for you.  If not, it would probably be well worth checking the LDS Family History Catalogue to see what films are available for BstE, so that you can hire and view at your nearest LDS Family History Centre.

Hi Rick

Thank you for the information and advice.  Being in New Zealand does create some problems getting hold of records etc. but at least you have confirmed Thomas and Matilda did not get married in Suffolk.

As I said Matilda was born in Mendham which seems to be on the border of Norfolk and the website you gave be states that Mendham is unusual, being in both Norfolk and Suffolk.  Perhaps I will have to put a request on the Norfolk page.  As you said they could have married in Berkshire (Maidenhead) so perhaps I need to try there also.

Thanks for your help

Best Wishes
