« on: Friday 07 July 06 21:02 BST (UK) »

Hi can anyone help pleeeaaasssse?? I have an Edward Gurney b c1855 in Hemel Hempstaed i think. He was married to Annie Farey b c1876 again in Hemel we believe. Her surname is a bit of a mystery as our family had it as Silkie for a while. i have traced her name as now correct but would like to find out who her parents were. I just cant find any more details and think i must have her plce of birth wrong? I would be so greatful if anyone has an idea?

Carla,

There is an Edward Gurney shown in census 1861 to 1901 born Bovingdon (very close to Hemel) 1854/5 - but he is married to Sarah.   Do you have any more details ??

Hi
Well that's interesting as his father William was born in Bovingdon. I have to admit i got the information from my sister-in-law. If they had a daughter Ethel b1912 who married a William Williams b1908 then she has made a mistake. Interesting that. Do you know if the dates match up.......

Hmmm i see what you mean....i came across that problem with another ancestor and cannot find his father any where. I know you can look at 'poor records' and applications to magistrates for aid' in the caes of an illegitimate child but even this didnt happen with my other ancestor. Interesting she was with her aunt and uncle...so where was her mother i wonder...and who was she? I love all the different spellings too just to confuse! I am having to concentrste hard on this. Thanks for looking...just how have you access to this all?

Buckland registers in Aylesbury registration district. This is the nearest birth registration I can find. It might be her it might not.

Births Jun 1878
FAIRY  Mary Ann S     Aylesbury  3a 580
Stampford-Fairy  Mary Ann     Aylesbury  3a 580

This is the only occasion in the civil registration up to 1910 (90% coverage on FreeBMD) of the surname Stampford-Fairy.

It is also the only instance of the surname Fairy in Aylesbury registration district between 1871-1891 but not of the spelling Farey(3). On the 1881 census there was a Farey family living in Buckland. They had moved to Bedfordshire by 1891.

Thanks for that....think my best bet is to send off for the records and see to be honest. Will let you know and thanks again so much. You found the info so fast. This could well be here because again the dob i had was only a guess i have been told ......i too noticed a Fairy rather than Farey but they had such variations on spelling just to confuse us down the line i think.  Shocked

This is the only Edward Gurney I can see on the censuses with a 1877 circa birth. His father is not called William.
I think if the 1901 census is the correct family

Births Jun 1901
Gurney  Aleck Edward     H. Hempstead  3a 743

then your starting point would be obtaining the marriage details of Edward Gurney and Annie Farey to at least confirm Edward's father and who Annie claims or thought her father was. You need to confirm that Edward Gurney from the marriage to Annie Farey was Edward John Gurney.

1881 census RG11 1444 folio 102
White Lion Street Two Waters Hemel Hempstead  Hertfordshire
Edward Gurney 27 Bovingdon, Hertfordshire,  Head Married Labourer coal
Sarah Gurney 29 H Hempsted, Hertfordshire,  Wife Married Envelope packer
Edward J. Gurney 4 Two Waters, Hertfordshire, Son
Arthur W. Gurney 3 Two Waters, Hertfordshire,  Son
Sidney T. Gurney 1 Two Waters, Hertfordshire, Son

1891 census RG12 1124 folio 190
18 White Lion Street Hemel Hempstead  Hertfordshire
Edward Gurney 37 Bovingdon, Hertfordshire, Head  Married General Labourer
Sarah Gurney 40 Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire,  Wife  Married Envelope Bander
Edward J Gurney 14 Apsley End, Hertfordshire, Son Card maker
Arthur W Gurney 13 Apsley End, Hertfordshire, Son
Sydney S Gurney 11 Apsley End, Hertfordshire,  Son
Emily T A Gurney 8 Apsley End, Hertfordshire,  Daughter
Ethel A S Gurney 6 Apsley End, Hertfordshire,  Daughter
Alice M Gurney 3 Apsley End, Hertfordshire, Daughter

Births Dec 1876
GURNEY  Edward John    H. Hempstead  3a 430

and for the fathers of Edward Gurney senior and his wife Sarah you will need this marriage certificate to confirm the 1871 census particularly for Sarah and her family.

Marriages Dec 1875
GURNEY  Edward     H.Hempstead  3a 653
LOVEITT  Sarah     H.Hempstead  3a 653

1871 census RG10 1385 folio 26
Bovingdon  Hertfordshire
William Gurney 48 Bovingdon, Hertfordshire,  Head Married Agricultural labourer
Charlotte Gurney 43  Bovingdon, Hertfordshire, Wife Married
Edward Gurney 17  Bovingdon, Hertfordshire,  Son  Ag lab
Thomas Gurney 14  Bovingdon, Hertfordshire,  Son
John Gurney 12  Bovingdon, Hertfordshire,  Son
Charles Gurney 10  Bovingdon, Hertfordshire,  Son
Ann Gurney 6  Bovingdon, Hertfordshire,  Daughter
Sarah Gurney 3  Bovingdon, Hertfordshire,  Daughter

1871 RG10 1387 folio 84
Main Road Hemel Hempstead  Hertfordshire
John Lovett 41  London, Head  Married Lab at mill
Ann Lovett 41  Box Moor, Hertfordshire,  Wife
Sarah Lovett 20  Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, Daughter  Employed at paper mill
Harriet Lovett 15  Hemel Hempstead Daughter
Clara Lovett 13  Hemel Hempstead Daughter
Ada Lovett 11 Hemel Hempstead Daughter
Alice Lovett 9  Hemel Hempstead Daughter
Emily Lovett 7  Hemel Hempstead Daughter
James Lovett 4  Hemel Hempstead Son
