I have found my great grandfather on the 1871 census. He was a private in the army and was living at Colchester Cavalry Barracks. Unfortunately, it doesn't say which regiment he was serving with. Can anyone suggest how and where I can find which regiments were at these barracks in April 1871 please? Thanks. ann

This will be extremely difficult. Both cavalry and infantry occupied the barracks continuously and the units rotated from there to India, Canada, Ireland and other towns in the UK. Many cavalry regiments were barracked there at one time or another and you need the services of a very specialised miltary historian with a large library to answer any such question. However, if you have access to the census film then work to the head where his regiment begins. Identify the most senior officer as he may be easy to find on the Army List at National Archives. It will be possible to find out what regiment he was in at that time. that you can do by yourself but it is lot of research.

Thanks very much for your advice. I looked at the beginning of the census return for the barracks and the first entry was for a "Major, 2nd Dgos". I take this to be shorthand for 2nd Dragoons. I then worked my way through every entry up to my great grandfather and there were no other regiments mentioned. It was so simple; why didn't I think of that for myself? Rootschat comes up trumps again. Thank you. Ann

Ann - I am so pleased that worked for you. That is what Rootschat is about - those who have some little specialised knowledge pass it on. And..it is completely free and, sometimes, a whole lot of fun! 2nd Dragoons sounds about right as the 13th Hussars had left shortly before.
