Ancestor in Derby Gaol
« on: Sunday 09 July 06 11:08 BST (UK) »

One of the members of my family tree looks to have been in Derby Gaol on census night 1861. Would that be the building that became the Dog Track on Friargate?

Does anyone know if there's anyway to find out why he was there?

Hi,

Yes this would have been where the old Grey Hound Track was.
Last public hanging in England took place here 1862.

The Local Studies Library in Derby 01332 255393, should be able to assist
they hold local newspapers on film, and possibly hold court records if not
they will point you in the right direction which could be Matlock Record Office.

Yes indeed the DRO at Matlock ( which is across the road from the local history library) holds the quarter sessions and the assizes

Thanks for the information. I'll look it up next time I'm in Derbyshire.  Smiley
