James GAFFNEY (1820-1891)
« on: Sunday 09 July 06 16:41 UTC (UK) »

Seeking links in County Roscommon to James Gaffney, who emigrated alone to America in 1846 on the SS "Macedonia" out of Liverpool. He settled in Newburgh, NY, by 1848 when he married Mary Dennis (d. 1898), and their four children included my greatgrandmother Mary Jane Gaffney Cavanaugh (1849-1921) and also daughters who married William McPhilliamy and Patrick J. McDonald in the US in the 1870's.

WEXFORD, CARLOW, ROSCOMMON, ANTRIM...
Redmond, Sutton, Cavanaugh, McMahon, Gaffney, Dennis, Wilson, McNeal/Lanarkshire/Paisley, Wiseman and Dunlop/Antrim/Ballywatermoy, Clyde.
Haven't found specific County locations in 1800-1850 period yet for Wilson (probably in Ulster), Dennis,
Cavanaugh and McMahon families. Definites: Redmond and Sutton from Wexford, Gaffney from Roscommon, Wiseman and Dunlop from Antrim, McNeal from Paisley, Lanarks., Scotland.

Hello Bob,

It is difficult to know the reasons why James left Ireland on his own at the start of the Great Famine 1845-49.
It may have been because he was the oldest child or it may have been because his family had died in the early part of the Famine. About eleven years after he left 1857/8 Griffith's Valuation took place in the county ... there were quite a number of Gaffneys listed. The christian names of the descendents of James and Mary may assist you in your search.

Best Wishes, Christopher
