This weekend I met up with my second cousin Edna Anne for the first time. She is known as Anne so one of my questions I asked her was when did she decide to be known as Anne. Well she informed me that it was her parents who decided! Her twin, Evelyn Catherine, also had the same story! Why did the parents decide to give her a first name that they then did not care to use! This has also happened to many of the rellies – Great Aunt Maud who was christened Elizabeth Alice Maud, also her daughter, Elizabeth Alice who was known as Alice. Why did the parents not give her the name Alice? From previous threads, I know that you have many other examples but has anyone got an explanation as to why. Indeed are any of you parents who have given full names but decided to call your child by his/her second or third name? With regards Great Aunt Maud, she was the only child amongst 7 that this happened to. The rest all had 2 names and were known by the first name (except the one that was named after his father.) Maud was child number 6 so it wasn’t because she was the first born, nor was she the first daughter! Very confusing! Sallysmum

In the case of my brother who has always been called by his second name (my parents' decision) his names just sounded better that way round. Same goes for my sister who was named similarly.

As I think about this now, I have a friend whose sister is called Clarissa Jane. She is known as Jane as Clarissa was just too complicated for her sister to pronounce and the name Jane stuck Sallysmum

This naming people and then calling them by their second name seemed to happen a lot, my Dad and one of his sisters were called by their second names I only found out that my Aunt Edna was really called Ivy after searching for her endlessly and then having to ask my Dad! My Mum was also called by her second name all her life too, in some cases it was because they were named for uncles, aunts grandparents etc. but in other cases they were called something entirely different, for example both my uncles real names were David and Harry but were known as Pym and Bo!!!
When I was growing up my Dad insisted on calling me by my second name - Jane - everyone else called me Steph/Stephanie. Luckily Steph won out
I think it was probably because my Mum and Dad chose a name each so Dad used his choice just to be awkward.
Now my brother Nigel disliked his name so much he called himself Nick, nowhere near his second name of Jonathan.
Steph.
