I had a very close look and it was 78 to me and on the index - I'll have another check later. The gap seems very weird - especially as he's a slater journeyman!
I'll try find a death/1841 census to confirm.

Andrew Murdieson a slater married to Elizabeth Elliott died aged 40 14/03/1863 of heart disease in Melrose as certified by his son Andrew Murdieson.
The deceased Andrew was son of Andrew Murdieson, also a slater and deceased and Margaret Watson, deceased.
Does this aid in your puzzle at all?

And there's more.. get yourself subscribed to scotlandspeople! 16/03/1900, Janet Murdieson or Miller , High Street, Earlston, wife of Andrew Murdison, Plumber and Slater, Earlston, Berwick, d. 13/01/1900 at Earlston, intestate
You can buy a copy of the papers for 5 pounds-sounds like a lot but I have spent loads on this website and you get what you pay for
I was in Melrose at the weekend but in a hurry otherwise I would have gone round the Abbey and the not so nice graveyard for you; luckily for me, my ones are buried in the Abbey but that's about as posh as my ancestors get.. the rest of my Dad's family were common miners.
Glad to help-good luck-fingers crossed!

Hi Harriet and Anne
My DSL line has been playing up so haven't been able to do much looking. Glad Anne has found him. I was very doubtful about the 78 as I said - although it looks like 7 compared with the other 2s on the page and the index has it as 7. here is a piece from it to see.
