James Hibbert Higginbottom - New Mills, Dby.
« on: Friday 14 April 06 06:09 BST (UK) »

Trying to find out birth/baptism records for my GGGrandfather.  Born New Mills, Derbyshire about 1863.  Father's name was William.

I know he was married 1885 to Elizabeth Ann Wareing/Potts, at St. Marys Church, Stockport.

Thanks for any leads/information.

Hi Linda,

The complete BMD indexes are currently free to search here:
http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx

I can see:
December quarter 1863
Hayfield registration district
James Hibbert Higginbottom
Volume 7b page 603

Oops - I now see you have already been given this. If you order the birth cert, it will give you his parents' names, father's occupation, mother's maiden name.

I have since my last post rec'd a copy of James Hibbert Higginbottom's Birth Registration.  It only lists his mother's name & maiden surname (Sarah Ann Higginbottom), and she is also listed as the informant.

Name and surname of father is left blank.  It shows her residence as being on Market Street, New Mills.

I am wondering if there is any possibility of looking up if there was a Sarah Ann Higginbottom living on Market Street, New Mills in 1863...as this may indicate other members living at this address at that time.

Thanks for all the kind  help I have received via this board.

Once again, many thanks for the prompt reply.  I am assuming Sarah A. might have been an unwed mother.  Because James Hibbert shows up living with grandparents (William & Sarah) by the 1871 Census, Sarah A. may have been deceased by then; or perhaps some other obscure happening may have taken place.

Oh what tangled webs we weave, when first we practice to deceive.  Hopefully this does not hold true for my ancestors!

Cheers, Linda (in Canada)

Thanks Suz...

Yet another direction for me to follow....who knows where this will lead...hopefully to my long lost British family.
