Hi there,
Well, well, things are hotting up for you! Good stuff!
There's a Henry Bomforth aged 20 (the ages for adults were rounded down so he could have been anywhere between 20 and 25) in the 1841 census on 6 June 1841, living with what looks like his widowed mother, Martha (your Martha's grandma?). Martha is aged 67, a washer (looks like). Also in the household is Rebecca, aged 25, also a washer. Henry himself is a turner. They are living in East Street, East Retford, Nottinghamshire. There are several other Bomforth families in the same town. Your Henry was a woodturner when he arrived in NZ a year later, aged 22, so maybe they're the same fellow?
There are also three or four Caroline Shaws living in Nottinghamshire - I can send you details tomorrow if you like. Have to do the dinner thing now.
Sweet dreams!

Hi again,
Henry Bomforth was christened 9 January 1820 in East Retford, Nottingham. His parents were Joseph Bomforth and Martha Ducker, who were married on 15 February 1798 in East Retford. They had a truckload of children apart from Henry, all christened in East Retford - you can see details if you do a parent search for "Joseph Bomforth" and "Martha" at FamilySearch. The John Bomforth and family who arrived in NZ at the same time as Henry and Caroline is probably Henry's older brother, christened 1804.
Cheers, Eve

Dear Eve, Thank you so much for doing more lookups for me on my newly discovered ancestors...I am absolutely overwhelmed with all the research on my behalf & all the new information being posted. I'm still trying to take it all in & because my printers out of action have been copying your messages by hand which at the same time sinks in better. Unbelievable!! I'm sooooo fortunate. Will look up on family search Joseph Bomford & Martha in a moment. Would be great to have Caroline Shaws in Nottingham. Must look up a map of London & read some data about London around 1800.
Another wonderful day (even if there is a bitter polar blast). Warm regards, from a very happy Kiwi, Tiffaney

Hi again,
I did another search of the 1841 using Caroline's age as it was in the passenger list, plus or minus two years, and one result showed up - the others I saw yesterday were either way too young to have married Henry or about five years older than him.
The address looks like Quarry Yd (Yard?), Sutton in Ashfield, Nottinghamshire. The family consists of William and Ann, both 42; Eliza, 21; Caroline, 19; Edward, 18; Ann, 16; George, 14; Emma, 12; Francis, 12; William, 8; Henry, 6; Sarah, 4; and Ellen, 2.
There is always the chance that Caroline came from somewhere else but as Caroline and Henry married in Nottinghamshire (and it must have been very close to the time of the census, 6-6-1841, because the marriage is registered in the June quarter) I only searched that county because they would probably have both been living there.
Hope this helps, Eve

Hi again Eve, it helps immensely..thank you. Can't quite take all this wonderful info. in yet..unbelievable.
Heaps of mouths to feed & feet to clad in that lot....poor woman & she was still alive when the youngest was two. It'd be hard enough thinking of their names don't u think. Those were the days!! I'm sure that was our Caroline, going from what you say.
All I can say is I'm very grateful to you for your valuable time & efforts. Without all this help I'd still be pottering around for the next few years. Cheers from a Kiwi still on cloud 9!! Take special care, Di

It's a pleasure - please let me know if you find anything about Charles that would point us at the right fellow in 1841.
Happy hunting!

:)Hi..thought I had posted this but can't see it. Charles HARTLEY: We have been informed that he was a sailor who travelled to most parts of the world & later tried his hand at whaling mainly around the South Pacific. Was also fluent in Maori so must have whaled on New Zealand shores before he went to Okains Bay, first as a squatter & later buying land, marrying Martha Bomforth & raising a family. ========== Also have learnt that Henry Bomforth (Martha's father) & his brother John fought in the Wairau Massacre in 1843 where Henry was killed.Cheers, Tiffaney
