Please can you provide help in locating the baptism record of Charles Edwards (g.f.) born according to a family bible January 14th 1871 Chesterfield. Can find no record in the GRO or any census until 1901 when he appears in Broughton Manchester.

Welcome to Rootschat.
Is there any further information in the family bible that might help spot Charles on earlier censuses? Does the family bible specify a birth in Chesterfield or is the 1901 census the only confirmation of his birth there? What information does Charles give about his father on his marriage certificate?
Regards
Valda

Bible birthplace states Chesterfield with precise date, census confirms place. Marriage certificate 1909 gives age as 36 but would almost disregard this as there was a big difference in g.f. & g.m. age,( ages adjusted to take account),also states his father was Charles occupation Labourer.

If the bible entries were written in retrospect and there is no evidence from the civil registration or earlier censuses of a Charles Edwards born Chesterfield then there is a possibility that he was born and known under some other surname. I presume the bible gives no clues to any other siblings?

Is there a quick way of searching through only January Chesterfield registrations for probable birth showing forename Charles or does it mean I need to plough through all March quarter Charles, selecting the most likely.

You can't isolate the GRO birth registrations to months and you wouldn't want to since you had up to 6 weeks to register the child after the birth. Pre1875 there was no punishment for the non registration of births. There were fines for late registration which is why some babies birth dates got moved backwards on their birth registration to avoid the fine.
FreeBMD has complete coverage of the GRO index for 1871.
Chesterfield registration district covered these areas
CHESTERFIELD REGISTRATION DISTRICT Registration County : Derbyshire. Created : 1.7.1837. Sub-districts : Ashover; Bolsover; Chesterfield; Dronfield; Eckington. GRO volumes : XIX (1837-51); 7b (1852-1930).
Parishes in Derbyshire (1837-1930):
Ashover, Barlow, Bolsover, Brackenfield, Brampton, Brimington, Calow, Chesterfield, Claycross, Clay Lane, Coal Aston, Dronfield, Dronfield Woodhouse, Eckington, Egstow, Great Barlow, Hasland, Heath, Holmesfield, Killamarsh, Little Barlow, Morton, Newbold and Dunston, North Wingfield, Pilsley, Shirland and Higham, Staveley, Stretton, Sutton cum Duckmanton, Tapton, Temple Normanton, Tupton, Unstone, Walton, Wessington, Whittington, Wingerworth, Woodthorpe.
