can anyone help please
I am looking for the baptism of JAMES THOMAS NASH his birth, was registered in 1875 Devizes
I have found him in 1901 at Canal Offices, 27 Nothgate St, Devizes with a wife Edith and 2 children, he is listed as James Thos Nash aged 26
the only marriage I can find is for a Thomas Nash and Edith Holliday Dec quarter 1897 Devizes
I cannot find a James on the 1881 or 1891 census, there is a Thomas that is close on the 1881.
but what is confusing me is he was born James Thomas, but then married as Thomas, then went back to James Thomas.
I am really at a loss so if anyone could help or any sugestions I would be most grateful
thanks
Janway

Hi Janway, I had the same problem with my great nan who was born Edith May Morgan, can't find birth cert for this though although I know her birth date and year. Then on her marriage cert she is stated as May Morgan, but throughout her life was known as Edith, strange folk!
Regards Kate.

It looks like you have the right marriage cert, might be worth obtaining from the GRO so that you have Thomas' fathers name and occupation or maybe getting his birth cert as they are normally a good source of info to get you started.

Hi Unless someone can come up trumps with the baptism to give father's name to be certain you will have to order some certificates. Perhaps start with one of the children which will give you Edith's maidenname? Then at least you would be certain you have the right marriage. To be sure the Thomas in 1881/1891 is yours you'll need his birth certificat and/or the marriage so you know father's name and occupation. Can't think of any other way round it. As to why he swaps between his first and middle-names I don't suppose you'll ever know - one of mine - Hannah- married as Mary Ann

This looks like a possibility on the 81
Isaac Nash 43 born Great Cheverell, Wilts a general labourer Ann 43 born Little Cheverell, Wilts Alice 13 born Devizes Annie 10 William 8 Thomas 5 Emily 4
is this the family you thought was a close fit?
Regards Kate.
