Mary Cowie Birth
« on: Sunday 21 September 08 16:36 BST (UK) »

Hi to all the very helpful people on Rootschat Grin,

I am trying to find the date of birth of Mary Cowie.
I have the following info:

Parents:  James Cowie & Mary Thomson

Married:  James Jappy/Jappie 19/12/1824 in Rathven

Died:       18/11/1887 in Rathven

It states on her death certificate that she was 87yrs old but have tried to find her date of birth with no luck.

Hopefully someone out there could help me get past this brick wall!

Many thanks

Hi, who was the informant on the death certificate? Sometimes informants get the information wrong & ages can be guessed at. I looked for Mary Jappy in the freecen website & only found 1 in the whole of Scotland. I think it's "your" one. Her age is down as 42,making her born circa 1809. The place of birth is Buckie. Have you traced the family through the censuses to 1881?

Hi Fist,

William Jappy her son registered the death.  I have checked the census of 1851 there was a Mary Jappy but it had her age as 46yrs so I thought she was too young.  I looked at the 1861 census but it wasn't my Mary.

It sounds as you could be right and they just got the age wrong.

Many thanks for your help.

Hi again,

I have just looked up the 1809 birth of Mary Cowie and sadly it wasn't "my" mary cowie her parents were John Cowie and Isabel Henderson.

Many thanks for your assistance.

Hello

Not much help really - just off the IGI after abt. 45 mins - all permutations tried.

James Cowie was either 'putting it around' or there were several of them in Rathven at round about the same time  :O)

However, there is an 'extracted' entry of a James Cowie marrying a Mary Thomson on 06 June 1791 in Rathven, Banff.

An IGI search from 1780 to 1820 only bring up the following births to a couple. of the above name.

1.  John Cowie b.  06 Aug 1797, ch.  09 Aug 1797 Rathven, Banff - 'extracted'
2.  William Cowie abt.  1811 Buckie, Rathven, Banff - 'submitted'

My bet is that some births weren't registered?

(There is a Mary Cowie born 1802 in Rathven Banff, but that's to a James Cowie and an Anne Sutherland, and a Mary Cowie ch.  20 Aug 1808 in Lonmay, Aberdeenshire - fathers name only given - James Cowie).

Good luck with your searching.
Regards,  Steve   :O)

Hello again,

Just back off www.freecen.org.uk

In the 1841 census there are 2 Mary Jappys in Rathven, both in Buckie - one with a husband of George and the other a husband James - I'd imagine 'yours'  (aged 35 = 35 to 39).

By the 1851 census I can only find the Mary Jappy/Jappie  whose children correspond to the one with the husband George- I'd imagine he's at sea fishing.

As an exercise - on Freecen try scrolling through the buttons 'previous and next households - for about 10 addresses either side of yours to see the amount of Cowies there were - and the odd widow....

I can't find 'your' James and Mary in the '51 census  :O(

Hi Steve Smiley,

Many thanks for both your replies they were very helpful.

I did think I might be going mad not being able to find this information but it looks like it may never be found.

Thanks for the advice on freecen I will give it a try.

Thanks
